Hi Guys,

I hunt for pigs mostly on cattle ranches. November appears to be the time for newborn calves to start showing up.
It is very hard for me to tell the difference between their tracks and pig tracks.

Mostly I'm guessing by context. Big cow tracks that look the same age as the calf tracks, and no small pig tracks. Some of them walk wobbly and I can kinda see it after watching the calves. What do you use to tell the difference? Spacing? Which legs overprint?

If this is covered by an earlier post, please tell me where to go........

Thanks for yer help

Thank's RL.
Last week I was out and I saw these tracks, got all excited and followed 'em to MooOOoo!. I have glassed little black calves on ridges where the brush/fog/distance/bad eyes made difficult to tell what I was looking at.
If I don't make a fool of myself sometimes, the lesson doesn't seem to stick.

You wont see dew claw imprints on hard ground.Shoats and larger hogs will have a slightly imperfict print, meaning one half of the print will be different than the other, cattle will be closer to the same. Upper

This was along and crossing ranch roads. Very nice impressions in the dust with a hard base. Now that I think about it, the back of the print was as well defined as the front of the print. Travel was on a slight uphill.
Thank you for your help.

I can't top that.

I was about to post my Tejon experience where I moved into another canyon mistaking a black calf for a hog.

My first trip to Tejon... I spotted a black back in the thick stuff on the other side of a steep canyon. Dang near killed my brother getting us over there, only to put the final stalk on a fine angus steer.

It happens.

Been there, done that. First time I went to Cache Creek I couldn't believe the luck I had finding huge hog tracks all over the creek.

Too bad they were elk.
