My little bro got permission to hunt a 15,000 acre + ranch about 10 miles east of Healdsburg. The owner knows nothing about hunting. He just says that he sees pigs from time to time but he is not looking for them. Is this area known to have a good pig population? Enough to make a 9 hour drive worthwhile?

SDHNTR, You are moving into all my hunting spots!!! I shot my biggest pig on a ranch just east of healdsburg. You need to talk to him about the blacktail hunting. Sounds like you have a golden key in your hand. I wanna go!! It'll be worth every hour of driving. Ed F

There are a lot of pigs in the Healdsburg area. Ed F brought up a great point about a deer/pig combo trip. The weather during archery deer season is generally pretty mild. I hunt a ranch about 30 miles on the other side of Healdsburg and it has become one of my favorite areas to hunt. It is beautiful country with a lot of game, definitely worth the drive in my book

Unfortunately the city of Healdsburg within the past 2 years has hired government trappers to 'eliminate' the hog situation in the town and surrounding hillsides. A good friend of mine is a cop over there and said the hog population is really down to nothing.......i hate to say it, but it probably wouldn't even be worth your time to go there. The trapper has reportedly taken 2700 hogs and his traps are now showing up empty.

The good news, Lurediver & myself live relatively close to the property and can go take a look for ya...would hate to see you waste all that gas for nothing.

Plus, they've recently closed the border from SoCal to NorCal.

First of all, the weather here during deer season is not mild.... It's extremely HOT. 100 degrees plus is not uncommon. Can you be a bit more specific about the location without an address? Lastly, 15,000 acres is one huge piece of land... I didn't know a ranch that large existed anymore.... Congrats and good luck

Wow, you guys sure are willing to help a friend in need. I was a bit off though, the ranch is 10 miles West of Healdsburg, not East. I didn't even know where Healdsburg was until today. The extent of my pig hunting has all been in the Central Coast region, and Tejon. Sounds like there might be some good potential here. Before you guys graciously offer your support, I'm still trying to get the invite myself. This is through a friend of my brother so I'm just the middleman.

SD, that's right near me. Possibly just a couple miles away. When you get dialed in, I can certainly help you out. Tons of pigs, just not always easy to find

I hunt a small piece of property about 10 miles WEST of healdsburg on Skaggs Springs road. That area has a lot of hogs but as the resident west sonoma county expert Mikensoco says they can be elusive. The terrain on the 1000 acres i hunt is really mixed as is most of that area; oaks, scrub, tan oaks, redwoods, conifers and meadows/springs. Good luck and like Mike said it is HOT in the summer 100+ degrees. If your new found best friend will let you hunt deer you will be in for a real treat as this area produces large coastal blacktails; my last two have been over 21 inches wide thick and nice. Good luck on your new find and if the property is on Skaggs Springs I have a 24 foot trailer with easy access that you're welcome to bunk in..
