Hi all,

I am going to be hunting some orchards in the foothills that have pigs running through them. Myquestion is does anyone have any suggestions on how to set up. I don't know what time the pigs are coming in, but they are coming in and doing damage to the crop. Would you set up outside the orchard with radios or walk through or both? Any good suggestions on bait? Should I bait outside in the surrounding hills?

First off you cannot bait in CA. What I would do is find the trails that they are using to come into, and out of, the orchard. It will probably at first and last light. What you can do once you find the trail is to "sweep"out the tracks with some branches. Make a good mental note what time you did this. When you come back next time if there are new tracks you will have a better idea of when they came through. Then set up downwind and wait to ambush them.

Pigdream,

First of all, unless you're hunting on a depredation permit, forget about the bait and "technically" the radios. Baiting is totally illegal in CA, and using radios to pursue and take game is also illegal. You can use radios for safety and general communication, but not for locating and moving on the animals.

Read those regs!

As to setting up, if they're coming in regularly, I'd say to set up on the entrance/exit trails. They should be pretty easy to locate. Just make sure to play the wind, and set up watching those trails.

If the hogs are already in the orchard, then some still hunting will probably pay off. Unless the orchard is gone to seed, you should be able to scope out each row as you move through.

It sounds like you're onto a good hunt. Have fun!

Depending on the amount of traffic in the area(farm hands/workers)you may want to set up before daybreak as they may be leaving at first light. If there is little human traffic they should be sticking around the orchard longer since the wether has cooled off. Good luck and let us know how you do. :big grin santa hat:

Well good thing I never used radios before. I will read the regs again, but if a buddy and I were set up say 1/2 mile apart and wanted a location of the other one before taking a shot that should be ok? I will let you know how it turns out I should be out there before long.

It isn't baiting if you dress up like a big apple and sit in the orchard is it? :big grin santa hat:

pigdream,

y'all need some help ?? I'd be more-n-happy to set up camp in your orchard area next week and keep logbook notes of all pig movements. I was thinking of going to VAFB but this could be more fun !!

Cheers,

Carl

Re: the radios, what you said is OK. The regs state that radios can't be used to say things like, "Hey Gome! Dem piggies is over here!", all in the "loose" interpretation of "fair chase". If you were to tell your pal that I'm in this location and you want to insure you don't shoot him, that's fine. BUT you can't stretch the law and hope a warden (and subsequently a judge) will let you get away with it.

You can call your buddy to come and help you clean, drag, etc.

Good luck and pass the carnitas!
