Been here on Oahu looking after my sick mom for almost a month. My sis from the Mainland came over a few days ago to releive me so I can get a break and go home to Maui (thanks sis). Yesterday we decided to take a break and go for a drive after going some shopping. We drove thru a nearby Botanical Garden (Ho'omaluhia Park). Last time there we noticed fresh pig signs everywhere and on another trip another sis and I saw 2 decent sized pigs. About midway thru the park we spotted this herd of pigs just leisurely feeding, and rubbing against the palms trees. I took several photos, then when the pigs finally scented us they ran away into the woods. I drove another 1/2 mile ahead then with my sis close behind we stalked into the woods on an interception course and in just a few minutes they walked straight into us. It would have been a guaranteed LU'AU if I was armed. Eventually one of the herd spotted us observing them and they all ran into the heavy jungle cover. This was at about 3 pm. Ran into the park ranger later and he stated these pigs are a big problem but with Interstate Highway (in Hawaii, go figure) and residential homes nearby no fire arms allowed. Trapping tried but they learn quick to avoid anything main made.
