I finally found my sd card for my digital camera after my son played with it and accidently misplaced it. Here is a picture of me and a pig that I shot with my iron sight 30-06 at about 85 yards. Pig was taken this past Tuesday at a ridge over at Pine Flat (Blue Canyon, to be exact). So go get them boys.
Hiking up the mountain 150 yards away from where I parked, I spotted a group of pigs rooting under an acorn tree with my binoculars. Estimating the distance, they were probably 200 yards away and with an iron sight gun, I knew my chances of hitting them from that range was out of the question. So my brother and I carefully sneaked up closer to them as quietly as we can. Getting closer and closer, I can feel my heart beat thumping faster and faster. Coming to about 85 yards, we both decided to stop and that was when I aimed my gun at them. Finally calming myself down, I aimed at the biggest one in the group of about 6. With the pigs backs turned to me, I have no choice but to aim for it's back. With a squeeze of the trigger,
<
my shot went off and hit the one I aimed for. All the other pigs ran uphill and out of sight. This one followed behind but couldn't make it up the hill. 15 yards of running and she dropped. My brother and I both ran over to the dead pig and gave each other a high five.
<
No, I did not poke it in the eye to see if it was dead LOL. Seeing where I hit her and the intestines coming out, I quickly undressed her and got her ready to be tied to a branch to be carried back to the car. Pig was shot at roughly 4pm and we didn't get back to the car until 7:30pm. I must say that it only took 3 years to get my first pig and it was worth the wait. Pig is estimated at about 90 pounds. Now I can enjoy some pig sausage like you all have been doing for so long already.
<
Now this picture was taken with my archery equipment because my gun was old and I just thought a picture with my bow would look better. My brother was carrying the gun and I was carrying my bow. But with me being older, I took the gun from him and took the first shot LOL.

I suppose congrats might be in order, but that's an awful funny lookin' 30-06 you've got there

By the way, and this is only a suggestion not a criticism... but a pic gets a lot better play if you clean up the gooey bits before you pose it. It's not the end of the world, but get those innards cleaned out, and then get a photo. It makes a much nicer trophy to show around.

Thanks speck, I'll remember that for future pics. I was too excited to even think about that. Just wanted a picture and I thought any picture would do. LOL.

Bit congrats to ya Bret!!!! You've shown a lot of guts tangling with the experts here on JHO, and I know you have been putting in the time in the field. I'm just disapointed it was not me to bag the first JHO Pine Flat pig for this year! But I have not been able to get up there yet. Sounds like you were also near the deer herd winter range up there -- see any bucks? I'll bet little brother is ready to get right back up there right?

I would sure like to know which of those dirt forest roads were open along that canyon, or if you reached any locked gates at all -- could you send me an email about that? I know I am probably on a long list of guys here wanting your "expert" opinion about now.

Once again -- GREAT JOB!!

Congrats Bret,
One question. 3 1/2 hours to get the pig back to you car? All 350 yards away?
Got any better pictures? How about a mug shot? Would live to see the teeth.

83yota.......If you've ever gone to Pine Flat, you'll know the terrain I'm talking about. It's a lot of ups and downs. Plus, I did spend some time field dressing it, finding a good branch, and tying the darn thing on the branch. Sorry, but that's the only picture I had. I only had two shots left on my digital (didn't want to delete any pictures already on there)....so one shot went to my younger brother and one was for me.
Jackrabbit (buddy), you got yourself a pm. Good luck hunting!

Bret,
Nope have never been, not in my neck of the wood. From your pic it did not look to bad.

Strong work and congrats. I'm still working on my first public land hog.

Great job! glad you got hooked up, and landed your first hog. Very nice of your brother to carry extra weapons for you. Carry a roll of tape next time. You can tape the front legs to the back, keeping the left and right side separated. This will allow you to put the hog on your back like a backpack. Very easy to carry a hog that size, and believe it or not, easier than dragging.

I don't understand why you cut out your face?

Congrats on the public land pig. That's definitely different for the guts to come out like that. I don't see a tag attached to that animal and your posting a pic.

Spec made it pretty clear that field pics with no tags is fine.

You deserve that hog. One suggestion on packing out a pig. I'm sure you remember my backpack. Get one of those at Walmart for $50. That 90 lbs. fits easily in the backpack. Your brother can do all the carrying out no problem.

An interesting coincident, now I know of 3 people that killed pigs on this past Tues.

Hey that face is very becoming lol> piggy piggy piggy. Instant shoot and dress in one shot.
Hide those inards in the future. I'm as guilty taking shots with blood.
