My buddy's dad pulled a 30 plus pounder out of the surf at Pismo back in the late 80s. Caught on a chunk of clam with a Berekely cherry rod. Made the local news since nothing else ever happens there
Don't waste your time at Pismo go to Avila. If you fish off the Pier at Pismo you can catch, often times slow paced but i've seen guys land 5 foot plus Threashers. Avila from the rocks and beach is much more productive you can catch a number of different types of fish.
No corbina at Pismo beach. California corbina range from Pt Conception to the gulf of California. Corbina can grow to 30" and weigh 8.5 lbs. A verified speciman measured 28" and weightd 7.4 lbs, was caught in 1955.
I actually saw that fish. The owner of an old bait shop in Marina Del Rey told me he caught it many years ago and had it stuffed and it was there in his shop. He has since died, but I believe the new owner still has that fish.
Corbina are great sport on light line, hard to find a fish for it's size that fights harder or knows the surf better. Some of the best baits are hard and soft shell sand crabs, fresh bay and rock mussle.
