polarized glasses

Anyone know if the material used to make sunglasses polarized wears off after time? I spend a lot of time on the water and want to protect my eyes. I have a couple pair of good quality sun glasses. One with amber lenses and one with gray, for different conditions.

I got a good set from my eye doctor. Same price as the "fashion" brands. Are optical quality lenses, and do provide full-spectrum UV protection. Since getting them (I'm late 40's) my prescription hasn't changed. Really help in seeing into the water when I'm watching for musky follows. In optics, you get what you pay for IMHB.

It doesn't wear off over time and if you are worried that they aren't working right, borrow someone elses glasses (must be polariod too) and while wearing yours hold up the others and try to see thru them. You will be able to see thru them when they are held out like they are still on your face, but if you turn them on there side they will go black. Any damage to your glasses will show as clear spots you can see thru.

I've used polarized Sunglasses since before they were ever popular and you had to special order them to find them. I have broken many pair but never had the polarization film (or whatever it's called) wear out or rub off. I started with Rayban in the 70's and tried about every brand from the cheapest, Fishermans eyewear, to the most expensive. Any of the mid price range on up glasses are pretty much optically correct these days so it is just a matter of preference in styles and colors. My daily use glasses are doctor presribed and I'm not sure who makes the lenses. They have a dark grey tint and are bi focals My fishing glasses are Serengetis with Amber lenses that I am using more and more due to the comfort to my eyes (No strain) I also have some light amber lense glasses that I use just for sight fishing by Action Optics. All very good glasses. I prefer glass lenses because I keep putting them down lense first and plastic scratches easier.....Check out E bay or Sierra Trading post for real good deals on new in the box glasses......hronk

You can find more info on lenses (including polarized) on Oakley's web site than you will care to read. I would like to emphasize a point Hronk made; buy at least a mid-range (price wise) pair of glasses. If you buy cheep you will suffer from some degree of eye strain resulting in a headache or you'll find yourself not wearing them and then straining you eyes from the glare of the sun (been there, done that!!!). As I've grown older I learned to appreciate the eye sight that I have. After $3000 spent on laser eye surgery I've become obsessive. I have 4 pair of polarized glasses of different tint to match different light conditions and five different pair of glasses for hunting!! These do not include my every day sun glasses. We take it as a rule that we ware eye and ear protection while shooting; it should be a rule that you ware eye protection while fishing. I've seen hooks imbedded in ears, noses, and one in an eye lid. No one in my family fishes without polarized glasses.

If I was to give you one pair of glasses that are the best I have worn and I think are the best on the market they would have to be Maui Jim's. They are 7 layer glass with the best polarized protection. They are pricey about $150 or so retail. I have seen them sold at Costco but in limited supply, if you see them at Costco and they fit buy them right there don't wait they will be gone the prices at Costco are usually $50-75 less than anyother place. Make sure when you are looking at the Maui Jim's that you feel the difference in the Glass lenses and the new ultra light plastics. I think the glass are far superior and they last a hell of the lot longer in scratches. I still have my first Jim's I bought 4 years ago and they only have 1 or 2 scratches and that was from my son grinding them on the ground. They have become my fishing glasses only. MAUI JIM the only way to go for on water sight. Just my

As Chap Dog said, Maui Jim's are great glasses, my wife wears them.

But if you're going to spend that much money, also look at Costa Del Mar's before buying, especially for water use. They are just as good if not better. After getting some two years ago, Costa's are all I'll ever wear again. 150.00 seems like a lot of money for a pair of sunglasses, but it's worth it! You can spend that much on other brands like Oakely, Bolle, etc, but personally I don't think they can compare to Costa's or Maui Jim's.

I've had a pair of polarized prescription sunglasses now for 3 years, and except in a couple places were I scratched them nothing has changed. Polarized is the only way to go in sunglasses!

Best polarized shades are By Action Optics, The Lost River in Copper lense for an all around lense. It is a photochromatic lense (Glass) that darkens and lightens slightly.
I use them to sight fish flyfish skinny water where I need to see into the water to spot fish.

Once you try polarized sunglasses you can never go back to regular lenses. I just picked up a pair of Spy Clint polorized lenses and I love the way they fit on my face.

When not in use keep them covered and you don't have to worry about them.

I'm sold on prescription polarized sun glasses, Im also in my late forties been wearing glasses for a year. Went through our super wal-mart and they had a special on a single vision polarized sun glasses "Carribian Sun" for 100.00 best 100.00 Ive spent.

I work for Oakley - one of the worlds largest eyewear manufacturers. Polarized glasses will not lose their "polarization" over time. The polarization is from a layer of film that is placed over the lens. One thing about the Maui Jim's that Evan talked about is they are glass and they WILL break. All of the Oakley lenses are of polycarbonate materials and will take not break even after being shot at with BB's at close range. Oakley has destroyed all the competition in the industry when it comes to clarity of the optics - not even close. If a sharp and clear image is what you want when fishing and hunting, i'd think about what brands are at the top of that list.

one advantage of glass lenses is that they will not scratch as easily. I dont care for glass lenses though because of their weight. I have a pair of Costa del Mar Eliminators (amber lenses) for fishing.. been very happy with them. Heard good things about oakley and maui jims too.

I would go with Maui Jim or Oakley. I have had the same pair of Maui Jim Typhoons for almost 10 years and love them.
