Police identify duck hunter found dead

11/02/2006

Authorities have identified the duck hunter who drowned on the Mississippi River between Grafton and Portage Des Sioux on Wednesday night.

The Missouri State Water Patrol says the victim was Eugene Beckerle, 63, of St. Louis.

Authorities received a call about 6:30 p.m. from friends of Beckerle, who had gone hunting alone late Wednesday afternoon. They were concerned because they knew his 11-foot boat lacked lights.

Firefighters arrived and found the body in the water near Portage Island with the help of the friends, who knew where he had gone hunting, Amighetti said.

Amighetti said Beckerle appeared to have drowned but said an autopsy would be needed.

Beckerle was not wearing a life jacket, Amighetti said. His boat had a motor, but it was missing when the craft was found.

Reports have the guy hunting pool A there.

Mad Dog and several other companies make camo PFDs. I've got one that has the CO2 cartridge. They are not that expensive, under $100, and they are the best insurance you can buy. It's not a matter of if you'll go in, it's when. If you run rivers or wetlands long enough, you're going to fall in sometime, somewhere. Why not make sure you make it home to the the wife/hubby and kids?
