NEW YORK - More than 80 percent of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, the highest such number since the early 1990s, according to a new survey.

The CBS News-New York Times poll released Thursday showed 81 percent of respondents said they believed "things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track." That was up from 69 percent a year ago, and 35 percent in early 2002.

I would hope that a large percentage of those folks would also say it is the fault of BOTH parties. If not they may want to seek a more diverse group to poll. However it is no ones fault but our own. Politicians or people in genral for that matter will get away with anything you let them including selling out their own country for a buck.

Personally I believe this nation is on the right track and always has been, but we have been led astray by our politicians of both sides of the isle. Granted we have some problems to work out, but we are a great nation of great people, who can do anything they put their minds to, if they try.
Where else in the world can any person from any walk of life accomplish this?
I am optimistic and know that sooner or later even the worst will turn around... I see the cup half full, not half empty.
One of the main reasons we are facing some difficult times is because we as voters have allowed those we have elected walk all over us, this great nation and it's very principles. Accountablity does not seem to matter and the era of the nanny state and entitlement seems rein supreme.

Polls are a joke. How many times have you hung up on somebody or said no thanks cause you got something better to do. All those people with nothing but time and the activists make up most of the polls. Also the way they word the questions is always one sided as well. This country is great, our politicians are on the wrong track.

Yes, because the Democrats control Congress and the President is acting like a Democrat....glad to know we are the majority.

The press has generalized our national thinking. They plainly infer that a hundred million people think the same about everything and that what they think is therefore right. How are we to know then what we do think?

What is that poll really saying? I presume you are implying that if accurate, this poll is saying that we need a Democrat. However, if they would have asked my opinion, I also would have said that the country is on the wrong track. Liberals have way too much pull over the cultural direction of our country. Liberalism = the wrong track. I bet many of the respondants feel the same.

Off track in what way(s)? I agree that we need to do something to help keep jobs in the USA and import less, and even though I do not like our troops dieing in the middle east, I'm very honored to have such heroic soldiers helping to keep the fight off our own lands.

I also know the answer to these issues will take a group effort and not single politician can cure the ills we face in this country. Sure no Democrat; as I value the Right to Life more than anything and our 2 nd Amendment rights next, anything else is a bonus.

Bullfrog & AZ hunter have about nailed it ! I have no doubt that many people believe that the country is "on the wrong track".
If I were asked how, I would say we should not be killing so many little boys and girls, we should not be glorifying decadence and perversion in the way the mass media does, concealed carry should be a RIGHT of ALL honest citizens of age. I would like to see alcoholic beverages treated more like tobacco, the heroes of the war on terror given status ABOVE athletes and the Hollyweird left etc.

Of course I am sure that folks like Chuam and 1Fit would disagree...

We BOTH think the country is "on the wrong track", and that's how we arrive at such a high percentage..

If I am out hunting coyotes and am checking out dog tracks..then I am surely "on the wrong track"..but that doesn't mean that I must
start following a deer track instead !
Conversely; if a high percentage think we're on the wrong track...that doesn't necessarily mean the track YOU are following is the right track !

I suppose CBS and NY Times are trying to imply that the President is somehow at fault . Let's say it together..President, not Emperor !
Most people with a modicum of gray matter know that "Congress proposes, the President disposes".That is why we find the approval rating for Congress, well below the approval rating for the President !

Chuck, well said.
This morning my wife and I were talking about theses issues. It seems that everytime we see too much control from liberals wheather it be in the White House Senate or Congress we end with more restrictive living and MORE welfare. To us, it appears that liberals want a type of Monarchy. More power to Gov. and less freedoms to the people. Gee, and they think they are doing the average person a favor; after all only gov. has enough wisdom to run peoples lives they think. Am I off on a tangent?

Anyway it often seesm to me that liberals do want a type of Monarchy like in old Europe where only the aristocracy had privilidges. In some countries only the Nobles could hunt. In others the Nobles never paid taxes just all the rest of the people.

And whats this I here coming out of Calf., that the school boards are trying to make home schooling illegal? Several of my friends home school their children, and they score higher on tests in general and also they are very physically fit kids.

Ok, I better close, I'm getting off on a rabbit trail I feel (actually that sounds like fun with a .22 LR or scattergun along).

IMHO, the long held premise of "it takes a village" to do anything, is what is behind much of socialism and the nanny state today. And this is the very foundation of all liberal dogma, that we as a people can't do anything without the government doing it for us.
We are seeing this play out in real time during this campaign season and it defines even those who claim to be "moderates".
The time is ripe for a positive image of Americans as inovative and industrious, who can do anything, for themselves... Socialism soes nothing but assure more continued entitlements and dependence on a bigger government.
We need to hold our legislators accountable and force them to do the job they swore an oath to do...
