Hi guys.

my buddy and I are deciding between bowhunting for elk in eastern Montana or eastern Oregon. If you had to choose one or the other, which one?

Don't you mean western MT? I bowhunted elk for my first time in eastern OR in 2006. We had a fun hunt but the elk were few and far between and neither me or my buddy got a shot opportunity.

I've learned a lot since that trip about elk hunting and I'm sure it could be done in that unit if you had enough time. I was hunting the blue mountains near Baker and La Grande.

I'm not familiar with MT but from what I've heard, that would be my first choice over OR. Hopefully some other hunters can help you out in that state.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, it is eastern Montana as it is by Fort Peck. I guess it is more central Montana..ha ha. We have access to a cabin out there.

My first bowhunt for elk was in desolation unit near Lone Creek Oregon. awesome country, saw plenty of elk(and deer!) but never got a shot. I would hunt there again in a minute.

Go eastern Oregon. If you have access to one take a mountain bike with you. You can find a lot of gates closed to vehicles and cover a ton of ground. There are many elk up there. I had one group of guys there this year that was seing 20 bulls a day and brought back a couple 6x6's. They made cool little trailers that they could hook to there bikes and bring the meat out.
