Pretty is as pretty does

I ordered a Remington 40X heavy-barreled .22 from the CMP when they became available in December, and it arrived yesterday. Guys had been posting pix of some really great, clean rifles they have been receiving. I opened the box only to be disappointed to see that the stock on my rifle was pretty beat up. Lots of dings and small scratches, a few big/deep dings and scratches and just generally kinda abused. There are even a couple of spots tht look like thye've been filled in with wood putty.

I then took it apart, cleaned it and was pleasantly surprised to see that the action, bore, crown, breech face, etc. all looked excellent. Hardly used, in fact. As shown above, I threw a Tasco target scope that I had lying around on it and headed to the range.

Here are some targets from yesterday, all shot at 50 yards. The bottom left is 10 shots, and the bottom right is 4 shots. The others are all 5 shot groups.

She sure looked a lot prettier on the way home... :bounce-aqua:

The preferred ammo seemed to be Eley of one form or another. Lapua did not shoot well, but Wolf Match Extra shot pretty well.

Pretty. You can clean that wood up and make it look very nice. I'd take an ugly tack driver over a pretty slop jar any day. Great score! Clean that thing up and post us some fresh pics.

Here are some pictures of how it looks after more than 7 hours of work - steaming, sanding and filing. I used 2 coats of tung oil.

$500 for a .22? If I had opened that box it would have gone immediately back. I would have raised a lot of stink. That looks like cadets used it for spinning drills and dropped it plenty. It is a shame someone thought that would pass muster. Sorry you had to spend hours fixing your new gun.

I don't understand, why did it cost so much? What is so special with this rifle? Not trying to be funny, but i just don't understand why so much for a use and old .22.

The Remington 40X is one of the top rimfire target rifles ever made. It's on a par with Anschutz and the old Winchester 52 heavy barrel. It's designed to eat a hole out of the center of a target at 100 yards, with the right ammo. THAT's why it cost so much and looked poorly for the price. He got a good deal.

looks to me like it shoots good. I bet if you play around with different ammo you will find one that will shoot even better. I would like to see what she can do at 100 yards on a calm day. cuz you got some real good groupes there.
