Printer question

I have been thinking about getting a dye-sub printer for printing 4x6 pics. I have a HP 6540 that does a good job of printing photos I like the idea of a dedicated photo printer that will have better photo life and more moisture resistent than using the std inkjet printers.

Have any of you used these. Olympus makes a couple of dye-sub printers that are reasonable in price and there are some others out their as well. I know that cost per print is a bit more for the dye-sub. Where I work they have a Kodak printer (model 500 I think) and it prints great looking pics. One that could print 5x7's would be great but I don't think I can afford one that will do that. Or would I be better off to use WallyWorld or an online service for getting prints made?

I have been using a sony 4x6 dye-sub printer for about 3-4 years now and I love it. Yeah, its a little more expensive, but I dont use it for large print jobs. It's great if you just want to print a couple and put them on the fridge. Its good if you want to add a couple photos to the photo album or scrap book. Its extremely convenient if you have friends and family over, and you want to send them home with some prints from the birthday party. The way the sony paper works (probably others too) is that it is also a 4x6 post card. So when I get home from a fishing trip, I can send grandpa the photo by printing, putting a stamp on, and adding aquick note. very convenient, and quality is superior to an inkjet.

The big advantages are convenience and quality. It is as good (perhaps better) than getting prints done at the pharmacy. And it is extremely convenient. worth the few extra cents/print for easy and instant gratification.

If I am doing anything of size, I have been using mpix.com

The quality is simply amazing

TXbow, what megapixal do you have? I have Minolta 5D and its a 6.3megapixal and was thinking about using MPix. And also how big have you printed? I wanted to make a poster of my 9yo girl surfing. Not sure if 6mp will work on a poster.

Hey Mike. I have had as large as 16x24 made and they turned out great. I have a 6.2MP Canon 10D. For posters, I would use a program like adobe photoshop and upsample the picture a bit for some more resolution but it should be OK I would think. What is poster size? 20x30?
