Problem with my Canon Sure Shot

Has anyone ever experienced this problem with their Sureshot? My camera refuses to do anything other than going into rewind mode. It acts as if it senses the end of a film roll not matter what. I've tried new batteries even though the indicator shows they're fine.

Any suggestions?
