Mother elk attacks Estes Park woman

ESTES PARK, Colo. (AP) - A protective mother elk attacked and seriously injured a 71-year-old woman who unwittingly came between the elk and her calf, wildlife officials said.
The elk kicked and stomped Adele Oberg as she was gardening Monday, leaving her hospitalized with a collapsed lung and requiring surgeons to remove her spleen, said state Division of Wildlife spokeswoman Cameron Lewis.
Oberg was in good condition at Longmont United Hospital on Wednesday.
"She barely saw the elk before it hit her and knocked her down and kicked her several times," Lewis said. "At one point, she remembers, it raised up on its hind legs and came down on her."
Oberg's husband Robert warded off the elk with rocks and called for help.
Emergency personnel said the calf was still wet, a sign it was just born. It was found about 12 feet from the woman's door.
Wildlife officials said people should take extra precautions to avoid confrontations with elk this time of year, which is calving season.
