Is anyone familiar with Los Padres Nat.Forrest?  I went there this past Friday
for my very first hog hunt, with my 12 year old son and after a 2 hr drive, come up
to the entrance and it's closed. A 325,000. acre forrest closed because
of a landslide they refuse to fix. To me it's just an excuse to keep everyone
out of public land again. I called the forrest service in King City before I went
just to check on that. Of coarse, a machine answers the phone, leave a
message. I know what I would like to hunt now. Can you guess?

Which part of the forest did you try to enter? There are seasonal road closures in some parts for the very reason you mention -- frequent landslides -- which the USFS fixes once a year instead of all winter and/or spring and it usually opens up April/May.

The whole answering machine thing is silly. The least they can do is mention stuff like that on the recording, kind of like how FHL updates their recorded messages.

There are lots of road closures in Los Padres and Angeles due to our little red legged arroyo toad friend but that is not normally closed to foot access, only vehicle.

It's a joke that they've closed literally millions of acres to protect this toad.  If there are 10 toads left then wouldn't a nice little 100 acre swamp be plenty?  If they need to close millions of acres, maybe there are more of them than we think?

Anyway, use it to your advantage.  Most CA hunters are alergic to walking more than 100 yards from their vehicle.  In this case there's an 8 foot wide (sometimes paved) trail behind a locked gate that can lead to areas where you'll find substantially fewer hunters.  Make sure you check each area specifically but most are open to foot traffic... only closed for vehicle traffic.

Which "entrance" are you referring to?  Seems there are lots of entrances to Los Padres.  I'm going up tonight for some scouting/family road trip and will have a look at this area.  Mostly San Lucia district.

The road I was referring to is Arroyo Seco rd. It is
from "downtown" Greenfield. In town it is Elm St. The
employee who maintians the campground, told me the road
has been closed for five to seven years. I wrote a scathing
letter to the King City Office of the Forrest service and
a copy to the King City "Rustler" paper.  This is April, and
no responce yet.  Thanks for the responces. This is my first
time,corresponding online other that e-mail.

matrix,

if you spend enough time in the sticks I think you'll find that a lot of roads that you used to be able to get into are now closed. It's the same down here where I live. It seems that more are closed than open. Sign of the times? Who knows. Keep fighting and writing letters to you're newspapers, congresmen and any body else that you can get to listen.

We came in from the other end on mountain bikes , had a little campground to ourselves and a wide open quail shoot with a mixed bag of mountain birds and valleys , saw lots of does but no pig sign . Once upon a time it had world class bandtailed pigeon shooting.

I am glad to see that the Adventure Pass money is being well spent????  Maybe they need to raise the price of the Adventure Pass?

The Adventure Pass is being used in the Los Padres Forest? Isn't it?

Maybe the funds from the pass are being used to close gates to their forest?

Do you guys ever get the feeling that some of the rangers figure the forest is theirs and that you and you and I do not belong in their backyard so they close the gate?
