been dreaming of this day since I was a little boy.. well not really.. just the last year or so.

I finally put the sony on the shelf and now my new Canon DSLR 20D will be slung around my neck. the sony served me well.. Learned A LOT about photography and found my passion with it. I was kind of sentimental about leaving the sony behind.
<
I have shot 15,000 frames with it, and spent many many hours out in the field with it. I've backpacked the Colorado Rockies, the Smokey Mountains, and many places in between with it. It has captured numerous whitetail monster bucks, foggy sunrises, and it has preserved many memories on the water. That sony has complimented all of the things that I love to do outdoors. I'm thankful for that sony F707, but I found that I was limited more and more by my hardware, rather than my ability or drive.

I'm still learning the landscape with the new canon.. I know how I want to use it, just dont know how to manipulate it yet.. (only have had about 2 hours with it) I already love the clean high ISO shots.. I could never even think about ISO800 with my old cam. Also the lack of shutter lag and the multiple bursts performance.. It is a little louder than I was expecting.. I had heard that the mirror slap was more of a "clunk".. hope that doesnt interfere with my wildlife pursuits too much. that might be an excuse for a bigger lens though

I broke it out during my lunch break.. and captured a few snapshots.. nothing spectacular, but not too shabby either.

Ahhhhhhhhh!! You're killing me Chris!!

My hindsight glasses say I should have bought the 20D over the 300D, not that there is anything wrong with the DReb.

Once you get to know the cam well, let me know what you think of the AI servo. That is one of the main reasons I want to make the jump up to the 20D, unless I find a REALLY, REALLY good deal on a 1Dxxx.

So now comes lenses. I must say that after buying that 100-400L, my sights are set a little higher. Although the 50 1.8 is a great lens and a great deal. Did your cam come witht the 18-55? That is currently the lens I'm looking to replace, possibly with the 17-40L.

Anyways, congrats on the purchase. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do with it.

yeah, the AI servo is on the radar to try out.. sounds like an awesome feature. I opted out of the kit lens, I purchased the body only (from bhphoto), and ordered the 24-70/2.8L. it was back ordered but I just got the notification that it is being shipped today.. I borrowed a friends sigma 24-125/3.5 .. I must say.. I might become a glass snob!! I like the fast glass.. (uh, who doesnt??)

I've been scoping out the 100-400.. but I think I am just going to go with a 500mm prime.. prolly can only afford the sigma, but I'm content with that. I've heard good things about the 50/1.8. that and a macro are on the list..

do you find the 18-55 wide enough on the back end?? I'm a little worried that the 24-70 will not be wide enough..

let me know if you want to sell the DReb and dont have a preferred buyer. I know someone who might be interested in it.

Well, for me I would say that 18mm is wide enough about 80-90% of the time. I haven't done a whole lot of landscape work, but what I have done that would seem enough. Although I tried a 14mm prime and really liked the FOV. I might rent the Sigma 10-22 to see for sure.

Uhhh, all you can afford? Am I looking at the wrong lens in B&H? From what I have heard I might add a suggestion. Look at the Canon 400 f/5.6 prime with a 1.4 TC. I have seen some phenominal pics with this setup on a 20D. Just a thought. Hopefully you've got some good shops that do rentals. I made the mistake of renting a 300 f/2.8 IS. Talk about fast, even on the 300D!

As far as selling the Reb, I don't think I'll do that for now. If I do get another body I'll keep the Reb as a second body.

Oh Yeah, those are the Enron bldgs. I only know because I looked at your file names.

HI guys, I just grabbed the 20D a few weeks ago too! My first DSLR - first SLR actually but I figured if I was gonna do it, might as well do it right. I got the kit lens (since it was only another 70 bucks) and I'm still waiting on the backordered Canon 75-300 IS USM. Can't wait for that! But this camera is awesome. Been working long hours so haven't used it as much as I'd like to - hopefully that ends soon. Got a question though. Where do you guys host your photos at? I've got hunt101 and I looked into some of the others (photobucket, imagestation, etc) but do any of these let you upload the high-res originals? Everywhere I've seen compresses them and compressed pics just don't do the real image justice with cameras like these. I've been wanting to share but haven't found a good place to host yet. Any suggestions? Oh yea. preferably free:) I might just have to break down and pay for pbase.

Thanks,
Gil

congrats on the 20D ! post up sometime here in the camera forums.

well, I run my own webserver and host domains right out of my house.. (off my dsl line).. JHO doesnt support people posting pics that have ads on them (eg hunt 101)..

my suggestion for the best free host is right here, the JHO photo gallery.. unlimited storage.. I have not noticed the compression factor negatively effecting the result..

if you need serious hosting options (eg with access to full res) you will probably have to pay for services.. but the JHO option is no doubt a great option for photos that are sized for the web.

gil850, first off congrats on the 20D. You should get some good work out of the 75-300 also.

As far as photo hosting, I use SmugMug. I can upload full size pics no problem. They, smugmug, have resizing tools and also let you set up your page different ways. Give them a look and see what you think. Here is My Page. If you decide to go with Smugmug here is my coupon zUZepqCA23hb2 . You will save$5 and I will save $10. Pbase is good also, but I know that a lot of people have been having problems with them lateley. Do a search over at DPReview and you'll see the problems that people are having.

Look forward to seeing your pics!
