Took some family photos in the pumpkin patch of my sister-in-law and her kids today. I cant decide yet which orientation I like the best.

Wow, great pictures Chris!

I agree with Chuckarlover, the second picture is much more appealing. Over the last few months I've looked at literally thousands of people pictures, there is something about a close crop that doesn't do it for me. The pumpkins in the background really add to the image, they give the viewer a good idea of the time of year the picture was taken.

Both are great Chris, I tend to lean towards the second one also. The pumpkins in the bg like stated earlier.

Machine's wife here... #2 is by far the best. Not only does it show the family, but it shows the pumpkins! Much to my husband's dismay, I used to grow pumpkins. I love them. So cute to have the family with them! You have a very nice looking family!!!!

I'd have to agree. Although what catches my eye is that in the first one the arms are cut off, the second you have the whole body. I think if the boys arm was folded in and nothing was cut off, that would be a good crop. It may not give you the hint that is was at a pumpkin patch, where the second one does.

Did you use any fill flash? Diffuser? Give us more details....

it's a toss up. I like the first one, but the little boy's arm missing is a distraction. Both are really great pics though

to JHO Mrs. Machine. I attempted to use fill flash, but it over exposed the sky and I thought no flash looked pretty good, so I kept rolling with out any fill flash. She really wants an 8x10 portrait style shot of all 3 of them. I dont know how to do that and still have pumpkins in the shot or without cropping her son's arm off.

Camera settings were:
24-70 f/2.8 @ 70mm
Aperture priority @ f/2.8
ISO-200
Shutter speed was determined by the meter, but was around 1/1000 sec.
Pattern metering
