I have a Fuji S5100 with 10x optical zoom but would like to get more zoom out of it. The screw on lens/filters that are avaliable in 2x and 3x is what I am looking at (probably the 2x).

If you use one of these and aren't wanting to zoom to the full 20x (10x of the camera + the filter) can you just reduce the amount of the zoom on the camera to say get 14x (7x on the camera + the filter). One place I was at said that if you didn't use the full camera zoom you would get a "peephole" type effect because of the filter. I believe that I have seen where some of you have posted using a similar filter on the Oly 700 series camera and it "should" be a similiar setup.

I hope what I'm asking makes sense. Also I expect that using this type of filter will cost you some light transmission. About how much do you lose?

Thanks for any information.

WV, it is common to get some "vignetting" when you don't use full zoom. You would have to experiment with your camera to see where your range is to not have the "peephole" effect. I have a 1.7tc for my Oly C740 and have to be at full zoom to use the TC.

As far as light transmission, I didn't notice any difference at full zoom(optical).

Do a search on "vignetting" with a teleconverter, I'm sure you'll find plenty of examples.

I had a B-300 (1.7x) on my sony.. And usually it wasnt enough power, so I didnt have to worry too much about backing off and noticing the dark edges. But I could have backed out about half power and been okay.

Adding the 1.7x did loose a little bit of light, but not too much.. (maybe 1/2 stop, I cant remember)

note: I'm selling my B-300 if anyone is interested.
