This year (because of all of the water where I am hunting) I will leave with 2 quarts each morning and purify as needed.
Spent the weekend scouting and found lots of sign but no Elk. Saw 22 deer yesterday- 6 bucks. Two were takers but as luck would have it their girlfriends wouldn't get out of the way.
Headed back next weekend and hoping for better luck.
Can't speak for the whole state but we have had a ton of water come down in and around Prescott the last 3 weeks- got over an inch last night at the house.
We hunt 3rd season or later in Colorado so its COLDDDDD. We are also stand hunters so we pack lots of extra clothing (bibs, big parka, seat cushion, etc.) Havn't weighed my pack but its heavy when headed out each morning.
I go with just the basics for comfort, first aid and gutting. Pack gets heavier as the day goes on due to the shedding of some clothes.....about 10 to 12lbs. I hunt solo so I figure it's going to be a couple of trips back to the truck if I am successful anyways.
Lots of variables as usual. Just for day hunts this is some things to consider.
I need a way to get the meat out. Doesn't have to be on my back. Maybe a atv, horse......
Is it early season (archery)? probably don't need a spotter and tripod. This would change with clothing too. Multiple layers would weigh me down.
Am I planning on doing a bunch of short hikes and heading back to the truck every few hours? Or am I leaving and not coming back until dark? This would help me with food and water planning. For short day trips Agua Mira tablets would be a better option for water purification as long as it's clean water.
Basically depending on the situation it could weigh 5-25lbs. Some constants I carry regardless are basic first aid, food, water, fire makings and kill kit. Everything else depends on the situation.
