SHOOTING SPORTS FAIR -- ONS-matthews -- 24may06

Shooting Sports Fair is the ultimate test drive

Outdoor News Service

When you buy a new car or truck, the annoying sales staff always encourages you take the ogled vehicle out for a test drive.

Do you know anyone who's bought a recliner who didn't plop their fanny down into it first? Shoes. Don't you try on a new pair of shoes before handing over your money?

But I'll bet a tall stack of quarters none of us have ever gone into a gun shop and had the proprietor say, "Like that Model 70, Jim? Why don't you step out back here and crank off a couple of rounds at that gong we've set up way out there next to the Democratic headquarters."

Noooooooo. We just get to leave fingerprints all over the guns. Maybe we cycle their actions. Or we drop the hammer on an empty chamber a couple of times to check out the trigger. Or we repeatedly throw a lovely side-by-side to our shoulder and imagine the gun going "boom, boom," in our minds and seeing a pair of chukar falling out of the sky.

Now, my imagination must be pretty good because I've talked myself into a gun safe full of sporting firearms that don't shoot near as accurately or as deadly as I imagined. But how many other guns would I have bought with a test drive? If I could have just fired that Remington 600 in .350 magnum, I might have bought it all those years ago. Heck, it could be my favorite wild hog thumper today. If....

The antidote to the look-only gun shop is the Turner's and Raahauge's Shooting Sports Fair to held June 2-4 (next weekend) at Mike Raahauge's Shooting Enterprises in Corona. The Shooting Sports Fair was the first and remains the largest hands-on, yes-you-can-shoot-this-gun event in the West. Virtually all of the nation's firearms manufacturers, and a goodly number of companies importing guns here, have their lines of firearms on display. Did I mention that you can shoot just about all of them?

Have a hankering to see if that new .460 Smith & Wesson revolver recoils so severely that it will rip your wrists right out of your forearms? It doesn't, but come on and see for yourself. Don't take my word for it. Have you never experienced actually seeing a bullet strike before the recoil caused you to loose sight of the target? Snuggle up behind one of the rifles chambered for the new .204 Ruger and discover this isn't a varmint hunter's myth.

In the market for an elk rifle and want to compare the recoil of a .325 Winchester Short Magnum and a .338 Winchester Magnum? The Sports Fair is a place to do this.

There's actually a lot more to the Shooting Sports Fair than just shooting a bunch of guns you'll want to buy. There are seminars. For example, Jimmy Rizzo gives an amazing elk calling demonstration, and Paul Caccatori teaches you how to train a hunting dog. Those are just two of a full slate. There are also shooting exhibitions. Two of the fastest handgun shooters in the world -- Todd Jarrett and Jerry Miculek -- are on stage daily, and Tom Knapp performs amazing feats with a shotgun.

The Shooting Sports Fair will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, June 2, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 3, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 4. Admission is $12 for adults and parking is $3. On Friday, women are admitted free, and kids 14 and under get in free all three days. There are $2 off admission discount coupons available at all Turner's Outdoorsman stores. For more information or directions, call Raahauge's Shotgun Sports at (951) 735-7981 or (951) 735-2361.
