I have eaten rabbits most of my adult life.  Still doing fine at 48.  If you go with the old wives tale of waiting till the first frost, you'll miss half the season in Calif.  I always hunt, and eat rabbits in the summer, sometimes 100+ degrees.  I do always wear rubber gloves when I clean them to avoid tuleremia.  But, if a rabbit (or any other small animal) has it, its confined to the entrails.  They do sometimes have this ugly botsfly larva in the skin in warmer months, but that stays with the hide.  So, anything that may hurt you is left on the ground, and your meat is fine.
