Range conditions at VAFB

This is a cautionary note to anyone coming up to VAFB to hunt hogs over the weekend (2/12 to 2/15): there are numerous UXO closures (unexploded ordinance) along the San Antonio creek and around Mod lake as well as down the beach areas below SLC-2. Also, due to the incredible amount of rain in recent weeks, the backcountry roads are impassable due to erosion or are turned to goo. AAA don't run tow trucks behind the Tracking Station.

There is a two week exercise that started on Monday, running through next weekend with it's attendant closures as well.

If you do come up, bring a four wheel drive.

Watch out for sows with piglets: they are dropping litters like crazy now.

We should be stocked up at the gun club as far as ammo. Come on out and join the club!

410 Is VAFB was military and police /fire only? I have a buddy who is a fire chief in LA, could he bring me on as a guest?

No he could not. A sponsor must be either active or retired military. Sworn law enforcement can hunt as long as they submit a letter from their chief to the base commander for prior approval.

That's not entirely true. Law enforcement from a select few places in and around Santa Barbara and Lompoc can generate and submit a list once a year to get their guys on base. Once the list has been signed for the year...that's it. I'm not sure if they have decided to continue the program or not for 2010...They have no plans to open it to all law enforcement.

Not according to you know who. Last I heard, they were not accepting applications from any new departments and were not planning to. They will not be offering enough tags this year for that kind of volume...

I can believe that. A LOT of bucks got killed last year. However, with the rainfall this year, we should see a good crop of fawns. Now, if someone would work at reducing the coyotes.......

See, when a guy wants to do his part for his country (like helping with the pig population on base ) they won't let him! Just doesn't seem right...

What doesn't seem right? Hunting on base is a great opportunity for active duty and reserve military to hunt........For security issues, the base limits hunting to a select group.

Andy is right: it's a great OPPORTUNITY for our active duty military. It's a PRIVILEGE for me to hunt as I am NOT military and just work for the military. I remind myself of that every time I go hunting. I try to give back a little bit by being selective in what I kill, and to help deserving new military hunters find a hog. (Sometimes with more success than others)

Easy weezy, I was just kidding. I agree, any man or woman that serves this country gets to hunt where-ever they please. I don't know Ca. enough to be a hunting guide but any vet that wants me to put them on some great fly fishing in the Mammoth lakes area I would be honored...
