RAW DEAL IN MISSOURI

Duke and I own a little farm down in Montgomery County Missouri. There is a nice house there that we use seasonally and we manage our place for wildlife. It borders the Danville State Conservation Area.

Last fall a neighbor who owns one of the adjoining farms decided he was going to turn his place into a rock quarry. How would you like to have one of these for a neighbor?

Anyway, the County Zoning and Planning Commission had a couple of public comment meetings on the proposed quarry last fall. Most of the neighbors (obviously missing was anyone from Missouri Department of Conservation) attended and every last one of them opposed the quarry. The Commission voted on the quarry and their votes were right along with the public outcry not to allow the quarry and the requested rezoning was not approved.

All the sudden, we get a letter in the mail saying the County Commissioner has overruled the Zoning and Planning Commission and the rock quarry has his stamp of approval and good to go. This arrogant bureaucrat slapped the Zoning and Planning Commission, as well as the neighboring land owners, right in the face.

How can something like this happen and what incentive would a publicly elected official have to screw over his constituency?

If anyone has any ideas or any influence in Montgomery County, help would be appreciated.
