I've gathered most of my plunder for a new rifle. I have the stock ban-sawed, (curley maple half-stock), the furniture ready, (Hawken iron mounted), a Siler flintlock on order and today I found a barrel. It will be a Hawken style, kind of. It will be a heavy rifle with a 1 1/8" .54 cal 44" Douglas barrel. Even after cutting the barrel down to 35" or so, it will be a load to carry. In the next few weeks it will be time to make some sawdust.

My lock won't get here for a few weeks and everything else is just a pile of parts and a chunk of wood. Before I start it would be good to see the before and after. I'll see what I can do.

how much do you think it will weigh? I'd love to make a muzzleloader like you are doing. Looking forward to the pics.

I'm not sure what it will weigh, but it will be heavier than I'd like for a hunting gun. The barrel is 44" right now and I'll cut it down to no more than 36" and probably even more when done. At 1 1/8" across the flats and 44" long, even with a .54 cal bore, it's quite a chunk of steel.

Here's what I'm going to put together. I started on Jan. 20 and have the barrel with touch hole liner and breech plug, lock, and butt plate all inletted. I've slabbed down the stock and am shaping it out now. At least it looks like I'm making progress. 1582213974252.png

I'm making some progress. I'm now inletting the triggers then pinning the barrel. Still lots of shaping with files and scrapers to get it to "flow". My goal is to be within striking distance by Easter.

I love these kinds of threads! That's going to be a real cannon, FTTPOW. .54 is a hunk-a-lead! As AMMOe used to say "Even if it doesn't expand at all ... big hole in, big hole out; dead deer, eh?"

Looking forward to your next update.

Well I ran into a snag this week. My mentor on the project informed me that since he is in the susceptible category for the Chinese flu (he's 80), his family doesn't want any visitors in his shop. I need to attach the under rib, drill holes for mounting the sights, pour the nose cap and shorten the barrel. He has the right taps, machinery and know-how for the tasks. I had to order the taps on-line (6-40 and 4-48) and it will take a few days for them to arrive. I'm still hoping for an Easter finish time frame.

In the "white". Ready for some browning and a little chromic acid for stain. I'll do everything except the barrel, ramrod pipes and under rib for now. I still need the barrel cut down and the sights drilled and tapped. Once it's finished, I anticipate it to weigh around 11 lbs. or so. I'm NOT looking forward to that!1585153608644.png1585153567192.png

I have everything done with the exception of drilling and tapping the sights. It took me 12 weeks and 15 packs of Levi Garrett to get it done. It weighs in at 12 lbs-2oz.
