To my dear JHP family:

I come before today to humbly ask for your assistance concerning an issue of the utmost importance to me. It is with great sorrow that I inform you of California Assembly Bill 342 that would ban the use of dogs to pursue mammals and would allow employees of the California Department of Fish and Game to capture or kill any dog they witnessed injuring or threatening any mammal without fear of criminal or even civil liability. As some of you know, I am an avid houndsmen and define much of my life's value and worth in the ability to pursue game with my dogs.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask you for your assistance in this matter. If you oppose the this bill, I ask that you join me in defending hunting. Regardless of whether or not you hunt with hounds, I would hope that you would recognize the dangerous precedent that this law would establish. It would take the power to manage wildlife from the biologists (who use logic and science) to the politicians (who use ignorance and personal motivation). Those who strongly advocate the support of this bill will not stop with banning hunting mammals with dogs, but banning the hunting all animals with dogs and then eventually banning hunting of all animals period. This bill would also allow Fish and Game employees to use their discretion to kill dogs they see injuring or threatening mammals. This would legally allow them to kill your dog that was chasing a rabbit or squirrel while you were taking it on a walk...without being held accountable!

I have created and published a petition on the Internet that represents opposition to AB 342 and I ask that you California residents review and sign it. I would also ask that you forward the URL to as many California residents as you can in order to garner as many signatures as possible.

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/AB342/petition.html

I will also be writing a lengthy letter based on the tenets of the petition which I will be mailing to the members of our legislature. I would like to be able to count on each and every one of you California residents to help me with this effort. I ask only that you email or PM me with your address (which I WILL keep private) so that I can look up your representative and mail you a copy of the letter for your signature.

***For those of you who are not California residents, I ask that you NOT sign the petition, but that you forward the petition URL to California residents that you know.***

I sincerely hope that I can count on your support regarding this most serious matter. To paraphrase the words of Benjamin Franklin, "We must all hang together or we will surely hang separately."

Regards,

Josh P. Brones (RIFLEMAN)- Proud Houndsman

This bill is almost as bad as the Mountain Lion hunting proposition. Petition signed. I hope it dies in committee. Thanks for the heads up.

Signed......... to date there are 74 signatures...... even though I may not entertain hunting with hounds (I've never tried it), I support the fact that it is a legal way to hunt..... with all the Kalif. members of JHP there should be more signatures! Go Rifleman!

Good show Rifleman!!

You did more than just talk (or type about it) and put up a great post. We need more of this kind of action on the other issues they are trying to pass against us hunters!!

My the force be with you (I know --- a dumb movie quote but does seem appropriate).

(I also posted the same reply to an identical post in Hog Hunting. Forgive me for the repeat, but I thought it was worth it).

If I read the bill correctly, it appears, without adequate due process, that a DFG employee may decide to kill or indefinitely detain your dog even if he or she has erred in judgement.

For example, let's say some non-hunters are out on a hike and their pet poodle goes chasing after a deer. A ranger, who hates poodles, can decide to leverage AB342, capture the dog, and destroy it.

Opposition to this bill can grow much faster if it's shown that the bigger issue is that it can give the state arbitrary power to kill your dog, which affects a much wider constituency than hunters.

(In fact, this could even sway some animal-rights advocates who would understand this argument as being cruel to dogs with a strong prey drive.)

Hey Shag,

Very good point, enlist the dog show crowd, I really feel for you hound guys, lawmakers are out of touch and way out of line.

Try to get some TV ad air time during one of the cable stations dog shows and hunting shows.

Good hunting,

Killzone

Thanks for posting, Rifleman. We're only up to 104 now. I promise to send this URL to everyone I know to bolster the petition. Keep us abrest of what's up, if we need to start passing out this petition at work somehow, I'm certainly willing to do that to get even more signatures.

144 so far. I hope that more people would sign it. My next guided hunt will hopefully involve dogs if it is still legal.
