Anybody going?

Reno to Host Noisy Competition, Expo with Elk Foundation

1/4/08

Missoula, Montana—Grunting, growling, squealing and bellowing, America’s best elk callers are headed to Reno to vie for a world title.

The noisy competition will be held as part of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s 24th Annual Elk Camp & Hunting, Fishing and Outdoor Expo, February 21-24, at the Reno/Sparks Convention Center.

Dozens of youngsters, women and men, including reigning and former world champs, will compete in the RMEF Dickies/CamoWest World Elk Calling Championships.

Additionally, the event will feature elk hunting seminars, displays of trophy-class and record-book elk, kids’ activities, auctions and a 400-exhibit expo filled with art, gear, firearms and outfitted hunting and fishing opportunities.

It’s all held as a showcase and fundraiser for one of the nation’s premier conservation organizations. Founded in 1984, the nonprofit Elk Foundation has led a grassroots campaign that has permanently protected or enhanced more than 5 million acres, a land area more than twice as large as Yellowstone National Park. Nearly 500,000 acres previously closed to public access have been opened for hunting, fishing and other recreation.

In Nevada, the Elk Foundation has completed 155 projects to help conserve or enhance 259,753 acres. The value of these efforts totals more than $11.9 million.

Admission to the Elk Camp & Hunting, Fishing and Outdoor Expo is $12 per person or $25 per family, and free for kids 5 and under.

Show hours are Thurs., Feb. 21, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Fri., Feb. 22, 9 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Sat., Feb. 23, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and Sun., Feb. 24, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Ranchwife and I plan to leave the kids with grandparents and go down for the weekend. OK, truth be told, Friday, we are heading to Cabelas. It will be nice eating a dinner without saying thing like "don't put that in your ear" or "yes, it will fit in you nose, but please don't do it." We might even go out to a show, something that doesn't have "voices by" in the credits.

Oh my! Our secret is out - don't tell the kids! We're doing Cabela's on Friday and the Elk Foundation on Saturday. But the truth of the matter is we're going just so we can have a kid free weekend!!
