Alaska Congressman Don Young spoke out today to urge the Supreme Court to overturn the D.C. Gun Ban and uphold the Second Amendment Rights of the citizens of our Capitol.

?The original intent of the Second Amendment was to protect each individual?s right to keep and bear arms. The District?s gun ban is a blatant violation of this right and the Supreme Court should protect Second Amendment rights for Americans everywhere by overturning this unconstitutional ban. If they rule that it?s legal to ban guns in D.C., that means guns could be banned anywhere, including Alaska!?

Congressman Young had previously weighed in on the case by signing an amicus curiae brief that affirmed an individual?s right to keep and bear arms and urged the Supreme Court to overturn the gun ban. He was joined by a majority of members in both the House and the Senate.

Also, in response to the Solicitor General?s brief that wrongly argued that a ban could be upheld, so long as it was ?reasonable?, Rep. Young signed a letter to President Bush urging him to withdraw the brief and submit one that did not argue for a position that would allow for even more gun control and even more Americans who have had their Second Amendment rights infringed upon.

Upon signing the letter, Congressman Young said ?Throughout my career, I?ve joined with my colleagues in Congress to pass laws supporting American?s Second Amendment Rights, including those who live in our country?s Capitol. The freedoms created by the Second Amendment are among the most important we enjoy and I will continue to stand up to anyone that attempts to infringe upon them?.
