In late November, an injured bald eagle was found hopping on the ground in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. The eagle had a broken wing and was unable to fly, the result of an apparent shooting, according to Thomas J. Healy, special agent in charge of law enforcement for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Northeast Region.

“We are investigating this incident, but we need assistance from people who may have seen or heard about what happened,” Healy said. “We are offering a reward for information that leads to the conviction of the individual or individuals involved.”

The reward will be half of any fine collected, up to $2,500, he said, adding that shooting an eagle violates several federal laws, including the Endangered Species Act, the Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The eagle was found southwest of Centreville along Joseph Boyle Road south of the intersection with Tilghman Neck Road in Queen Anne’s County, Md., on Nov. 29. It was successfully rehabilitated and was released back into the wild in late February, Healy said.

People with information about the eagle shooting are encouraged to contact Special Agent Daniel Collins of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Office of Law Enforcement in Dover, Del., at 302-730-9184. Callers may remain anonymous.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The Service manages the 95-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System, which encompasses 544 national wildlife refuges, thousands of small wetlands and other special management areas. It also operates 69 national fish hatcheries, 63 fish and wildlife management offices and 81 ecological services field stations. The agency enforces federal wildlife laws, administers the Endangered Species Act, manages migratory bird populations, restores nationally significant fisheries, conserves and restores wildlife habitat such as wetlands, and helps foreign governments with their conservation efforts. It also oversees the Federal Assistance program, which distributes hundreds of millions of dollars in excise taxes on fishing and hunting equipment to state fish and wildlife agencies.
