My first hog hunt was with a Marlin Guide 45/70 with peep sight. The first animal with that gun and the first day in the field with it.

Those are the most awesome feeling! Getting game with your first outing with a rifle really like seals its place in your heart!

I had good luck with hand loaded Nosler 180g e-tips in the 30-06. A friend with a 7mm mag had good luck with the Barnes “LRX” and when I got my 28 Nosler a couple years ago I worked up a load with the 168g LRX, very impressed with that load. The pic was from a estimated 180 Lb sow at 310 yds

Dang. So question... you having made a 310yd shot like that. What would you recommend as the magnification range a person should have on their scope if the terrain they hunted on offered them shots of that length? (Typically I'm not, which is why I ask.) Is a standard 3-9x realistically sufficient? Or would a person be better served at those distances with like your 4-14's or ???

i had a 3-9 on my 30-06 and it worked fine but was not comfortable with it beyond about 250. The 28 Nosler on the other hand shoots so well i would not hesitate on a shot out to say 450 providing a good rest and favorable wind, that load still has 2150 foot pounds of energy at 450 yds (amazing round) I have a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22 on that one, it is pretty easy to hit a 10 inch round steel target at 1000 yds, not to say I would try for an animal at that distance.
