Just wondering how ya tell these two apart?  I have hunted grouse in Tulare County and just assumed they were rough grouse, I can't find in the regs a description. Anyone have any pics? Or a general description?

Sage grouse as the name inplies will be found mostly in areas of heavy sage, they are about the size of a chicken 3-4 LBS. Dark breast meat.

Ruffed grouse are only about half that size and less and they are usually found at higher elevations in stands of trees. White breast meat.

Blue grouse are about the same size as sage grouse but with a heavy blue tint in the feathers and I find them in high elevations in stands of pine. Very tasty bird also.

We don't have sharptail grouse here in Nevada so I have never hunted them.
