Salato Wildlife Education Center Celebrates National Hunting and Fishing Day
9/17/07
Frankfort, Kentucky - Sportsmen and sportswomen pay for the conservation of Kentucky's abundant natural resources, and on Saturday, September 22, National Hunting and Fishing Day celebrates hunters, anglers, and boaters of all ages. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources' Salato Wildlife Education Center will host activities from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 22.
Learn about the natural history of Kentucky's big game, watch Kentucky Fish and Wildlife biologists demonstrate filleting fish, observe working traps and learn to bow-fish. Kids can learn how to track an animal or be weighed, measured and tagged like a bear. Visitors can try their hand at archery, tomahawks or air guns. The Salato Center will provide all basic safety instructions and necessary equipment for anyone to step up and shoot.
Representatives from Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited and Quail Unlimited will be at Salato for anyone interested in joining one of these outdoor organizations. Quail Unlimited will sell raffle tickets for a rifle, with proceeds benefiting habitat improvement.
As part of the all-day celebration, the Salato Center will host its second annual Wild Game Cook-off. Everyone can sample the competition and vote on their favorite dish. The Wild Game Cook-off categories include barbecue, venison, soup/stew, chili, exotic meat, fowl, fish, elk and bison. Registration is required to compete in the Wild Game Cook-off. Contact the Salato Center for contest rules.
For more information call 1-800-852-0942, ext. 409. Learn more about upcoming events at the Salato Center on the Internet at fw.ky.gov.
