Just wondering if anyone has ever hunted the drainage above Vallecito Res. outside of Durango Colorado? I'm planning on taking two horses up the Vallecito Creek Trail, trail 529 towards Roell Creek. Do any of you know if there is much to graze on once up there or should I pack my hay in. I was planning on taking a bale or two of certified hay and a bag of oats but is there any grazing available once on the mountain. I've been looking at the areial photos and such but don't see may meadows but it may just be my map reading skills. One other question, has anyone ever hunted trail 528 towards Emerald Lake on up to the divide?

Thanks,
KO

Be aware that there was a bad fire up there awhile back. Just got back from there and it burned right down to Vallecito Res.
Good luck

Yes, there was indeed a fire up there the Missionary ridge fire. I have hunted that area before. I have heard that the elk are back in there like crazy but not 100% sure. Get an outfitter, it is the best advise I can offer if you can afford it.

Dispite the big Missionary Ridge fire a few years back, the elk are still there. That is some rough country above Vallecito. Groundhog & Lemon Lake are really good areas but both attract a good many hunters. Haven't been up there since the fire, but a buddy of mine in Durango hunts there pretty regularly with good success.
