I have talked to a DFG warden about 3 months ago who said that the hunts went so well last time they were trying to get another one set up. They used the money from the pig tags for those hunters who were drawn. There is a pretty good chance of a 2nd round of hunts being proposed.
I see you guys are referencing Santa Cruz Island. I assume that is close to the santa cruz mountains. I am an out of stator. Do you happen to know of any where I can hunt wild boar March 27-29, 2004 in the Santa Cruz mountains? I am going to be in town and have a couple extra days.
Any info you can provide would be much appreciated.
Santa Cruz Island is about 1 mile offshore of Santa Barbara, Which is 3 1/2 hours south of Santa Cruz the city. As far as Santa Cruz mountians, Pigs are scarce and very hard to hunt in that area. Not to mention most is private property. Your best bet would be to drive an hour south to Monterey county and YOU WILL get a pig.
Oh man, you haven't seen what I've been seeing around here. Major sign everywhere.
But it is true it's mostly private or state land around here. The Coast Dairy Lands property (around 7,000 acres) on the north coast is about to be turned over to the BLM, but as it stands right now, it looks like no public hunting will be allowed...
I have access on a 160 acre organic co-op farm close by, and I'm prolly going out there this weekend to check it out.
Sorry RL. What I meant is what you said. There really is NO huntable property(Public) that is accessible where the hogs are. I also believe there are no guides or or pay to hunt property up there? I do know of some just south of corralitos/East of Watsonville. I believe it's a pretty high $$$ hunting club though and near impossible to get on. Anyways, Montery county has what 30-50 guides(Or people that have access to ranches). As far as hogs in general they surround the edge of Santa Cruz county all the way around. I too have been seeing alot of sign but more south of you (Aptos/Watsonville) Anyways......
I was up at a sweet local ranch last week that's getting hammered. Real nice folks, told me in the nicest way possible - NO. Just the nicest folks though, invited me in, gave me a soda, we talked for awhile..
Hey sdbowyer, Yeah they were trying to get another lottery going. I talked to him during the fall turkey season. He said he was the warden that drove all the hunters out on that island after they got off the plane. He told me the pigs are like vermin over there. Most hunters got all the meat they could fit into their ice chests the first couple HOURS of being there!!
Yeah the warden told me when a certain group of animal rights activists found out who the "contractor" was, they thru a fit. The contractor backed out.
Which still leaves the problem of wild pigs on that island. Unless they came up with a solution since i last talked to him.
