  1. Knife sharpener
  2. Rubber gloves, wear while gutting
  3. Small camera - you need a pic of you and your boar for JHP, before it gets quartered for the cooler

Happy hunting!

Are you carrying extra socks?  Seems like that's the biggest thing I ever dealt with on extended hikes.  I can wear the same clothes for a couple of days, but if the socks get wet or torn that really can ruin the whole trip.

I'm with Shag on the knife sharpener.  Might even throw in a couple of extra knives if you have them.  Hog skin can be pretty rough on an edge.

Looks like you covered just about everything there... 50 lbs really limits you to the bare necessities.  Good luck, have fun!

Water?  I'd be careful about assuming that you'll be able to find enough standing water to use that filter on.

Well, I shoud have mentioned that since I am carrying the tent, my buddy is carrying the sharpening stone, the gambrel, and the camera.  Songdog, I was worried about the water too, but I spoke with the biologist in charge for the hunt and he assured me that water was readily available in creeks.  I will be wearing most of the clothes I plan on taking and hopefully I can stuff some extra goodies in the cargo pockets of my cammies.

Is this some clever way of rubbing it in that you got picked?  Man that's gonna be a great hunt!  Definitely take tons of pictures.  You may never be back.  Take more pictures of the kill than you think you'll need. It's only film, that way you can pick from the best.

Creeks?  I didn't come across any water sourses while I hunted there other than one muddy wallow that you would never get through a filter.  I would verify the water supply.  You will need plenty it is rough.

Personally, I would drop the tent, buy a light pad (they are cheap) and save yourself a few pounds.

Dakota,
What part of the island were you on.  I know the terrain varies greatly.  We will beon the Western 1/3rd of the island.  Maybe there is more water on this part?  I sure hope so.

I'll second the vote for pictures, pictures and more pictures.  When you think you've taken enough your getting close, when you think you've take way too many... take a couple more.  That includes helo ride over, pictures straight up at night at the stars, terrain and of course pigs.

If needed, I'm sure we can start  JHP film subsidizing fund.

I landed on the east end and hiked of over the hill/mountain to the west end.  The east end is bone dry and while the west end is more lush, I sure wasn't noting any waterfalls and geysers.  I should note it was 89 or 90 when I was there.

I just checked a topo, it does show a couple of springs on the west end.  I might be a bit prejudice, I was short on water and suffered dearly hiking out.

Small topo map of your area shouldn't weigh much.

Also, Jim Matthews wanted me to pass this on, if you want your story and pics in his Hog Hunter Newsletter, take lots of pics and contact him, he's interested in hearing from everyone who does this hunt.

Jim can be reached by telephone at 909-887-3444, e-mail at odwriter@aol.com, or the U.S. Mail at Outdoor News Service, P.O. Box 9007, San Bernardino, CA 92427-0007.

Have fun and good luck.

A previous thread had mentioned a 5 lb. block of dry ice. Since I'm going on one of the last hunts (#9), I'm really giving that advice some thought. I'm going to bring along at least a gallon of water in addition to the purifier for some insurance.

Thanks guys.  All good input.  To that list I have also added the ever- important toilet paper.  I promise I will will take plenty of pictures and plaster them all over this place.  Jesse, what is the topo map named for the island?  I am assuming its called "Santa Cruz Island."  I will definitely pick one up.  Also thanks for the line on Jim Mathews.  I'll get in touch with him.  About the ice, I talked to the DFG folks and they said without question DO NOT bring ice.  I think they want to pack gear in empty coolers on the way over and want to save the room.  It was 39 degrees this morning at 6 in Camarillo so I'm hoping the cool weather will hold.  Take care all.

Since you are packing TP, did the DFG personnel tell you if there were toilets?  O/w you may need a trenching tool.

I was under the impression that each pair of hunters would be in a 'zone' and not migrating across the island.  For that reason, I would plan on add'l water.

How's the weather been out there?

Haha Bailey... I had assumed the JD  was part of the "First Aid Kit", under "Antiseptic".

Oh yeah except my antiseptic will be a flask of Glen Livet.  For those starlit nights after a gormet dinner of jerky and trail mix.  One week from today, I can't even think about the work I have to do this week.  I weighed all my gear yesterday and I am right on at 50lbs.  I wonder how the two trips this week will do.  I added the first aid kit (duh) and some baby wipes without adding too much weight.  Marty, we are not able to "disturb" the soil at all per Nature Conservancy rules so I don't know what I'll do when nature calls.  We cant bury the carcass either.  We are insrtucted to put bones and guts and such "in and under bushes."  Silly rules if you ask me but for this opportunity I'll do what they say.  Take care.

Disturb the soil? Oh man.  Yeah you don't want to harm the yellow honeycombed, varigated island daphodill.  We need to turn the animal whackos loose on the fauna lovers on this one.  They say you are supposed to bury the carcass so as not to have a vulture or animal eat the lead in the gut pile.

Who's going down the Turkey vulture or the daphodill?  It would be funny if it were so sickening.
