I am going to New Brighton State Beach this weekend and was wondering if there are any places to find turkeys within an hour drive (public land). If not I guess I will be fishing on the beach.

Ventana Wilderness has turkeys, but it's more than an hour from New Brighton Beach, and then you'll need to wear out some serious boot leather to find the birds once you get there.

Your best bet it to take advantage of the salmon opener and get on a boat!

First 27 yrs of my life was in Santa Cruz, Monterey now, if you don't have contacts to any private land around SC (as Backcountry said) you are much better off hitting the Salmon. If you are interested in Salmon, Santa Cruz Harbor, Moss Landing or Monterey would be your best shot. The fishing has been fair this last week,,, probably better on the Monterey side.
