saw some whitetails in velvet

Took a walk last night not far from my house. I was wanting to get some photos of a great blue heron that resides in the estuary near by.. didnt find the heron, but saw some whitetails instead..

Got to the edge of the water and waited about 20 minutes to see if I could see the great blue.. she must have been fishing elsewhere because I didnt see her.

Headed over to the pipeline, I've seen deer here before, was hoping to get lucky.

As I started walking along the edge of the pipeline, a doe walked out. She didnt even see me. I stalked about another 20 yards, attached my telephoto, and took a couple of photos. She eventually turned and saw me and headed back into the woods

Walked some more down the pipeline and finally decided to turn around, on my way back, I saw 2 bucks in velvet. They were traveling the same trail that the doe was. Sun was getting low and the shadows were making it dark. Couldnt get too close to them.

Its frustrating to photograph deer in this area because it gets so dark so early. Everytime I have seen deer here, it is too dark to get great photos.. but its better than sitting on the couch I guess.

A 300 f/2.8 might take care of the low light problem

Nice shots Chris. I'm going back to Colorado in a few weeks and I'm looking forward to finding some muleys in velvet.

Off topic, but you work at NASA right? My Moms husbands daughter(sounds like that line from Ferris Beullers day off) works there also(As well as her husband). I'll have to find out their last name and see if you ever cross paths.

yeah.. a dslr would solve most of my problems. (shooting clean at ISO 800 or 1600 would be awesome!) gonna have to free some financial resources first though... but soon, real soon.

Well, up until a year ago, I worked at NASA. Then I went to the dark side and started con$ulting for commercial companies.

NASA employ's a pretty big work force, but I know quite a few people in the software realm. Do they live in the Clear Lake area? If you or your cuz are ever down here visiting, give me a shout.

What kind of hardware are you going to use for the CO trip muleys? 300mm? 400mm? do you use a tele too?

I haven't read many reports on the 350XT yet, but it seems like it's a pretty good camera. Still if I could afford the 20D I'd go that route. Pretty good on the high ISO's campared to the 300D.

The guys name is Randy Hubbard and his wife's name is Terri. They both work there and I know what you mean about employing a large number of people.

Sigma 105 f/2.8 Macro
Canon 50 f/1.8
Canon 18-55 (kit lens, I wanted to pick up a 17-40L before the trip but couldn't get the money together)
Tamron 75-300
Hopefully I'll get treated to some thunderstorms again this year. I've got a better idea how to shoot lightning.
