Scent attractant

I have an "Acorn Rage" buck bomb type scent attractant and I know they make a "sweet corn" one as well.. Just wondering if anyone has ever used scent attractants before and if they worked well. I actually got it a couple years ago in Virginia for late season deer hunting when food is scarce but never got around to using it..

I asked a Game Warden last year about using scents similiar to what you are referring to and was told they are illegal to use here in CA.

one thing i have defintily learned about hunting in california it is a very greedy state for sure, they want so much revenue from us year after year for outdoor sportsmen and hunters when it comes to licences, tags, hunting equipment, amo and supplies for very little in return, and on top of that so many non stop restrictions when it comes to hunting here in ca. u have to think about consistantly when u are out in the field because wild justice could will be waiting for u somwhere. most land is private so u have to pay to play and it aways seems public land hunting consist of long drives and gas consumption which always cuts into your hunting time.

i am so excited about moving to Florida now more then ever knowing that its a hunters and fishermans paridise without all the bs restrictrions and high fees, i am going to really enjoy the outdoors when i am there!....tra

"Scent Bombs" are not illegal to use in California. Well unless "Uncle Ed's" in Atascadero Ca is breaking the law for selling them.

Where are you moving to in FLorida? I love that too. My parents just bought their second home in Clearwater, Florida

The big thing is why the heck are any of these big and little store's here in CA even aloud to sell them, if it is illegal to use, make it illegal to sell. They sell blacktail scent I think in both doe and buck. If we cant use it why make it.

I asked the same thing...why allow to sell???...but I was told its illegal for attracting game.....but that's just my 2 cents....by all means...if u going to use it...its your decision alone....hunt safe and goodluck

Serously though, if I get a $100 - $10,000 dollar fine for "baiting" animals with cent. My rear end is taking that bill right into Uncle Ed's Out fitters.....:lol bashing sign:

do not figure its legal just because a store in CA sells it. I've seen a few small shops sell hog bait... don't do it.

Hogwild, i am moving just south east of Ft. Myers about 3 hrs from clearwater. got a sister in Tampa and i was talking to my mom back east yesterday and reminded me her sister lives in Fl. too and i belive she mentioned i have a couple of uncles who moved there recently, gotta to call her back find out what areas the stay!......tra

i came across this thread and it got me wondering about the issue so i sent an email to the local dfg office and this is what they said:

"Yes this would be legal to use. Attractants that are food based or mineral based are not.

Hi I have a question about the use of liquid scent attractants, like buck urine, for hunting. Are they legal? I have seen them being sold in stores so I was thinking that they might be legal. The regulation booklet uses the term "bait" as being prohibited and "bait" usually refers to food so i was wondering if scents can be used. Your response is greatly appreciated.

OK...that didn't clarify it...I know scent control is OK to use and ofcource any food bait is illegal in Cali...But USD1 asked of a scent resembling a foodsource like..."Sweet Corn"...is it legal?...and than there's the doe or buck urine attractant...is that legal?...we need Mr Warden to clarify these questions

I kno way back when these guys were using their woman's bloody period pad to attract bucks got in trouble in A zone...like I said...I was told anything that attracted game to u was illegal unless the officer saying that was blowing smoke at me...but please clarify...I d like to know what's legal or not legal on this subject

I was told by a warden last year that scent attractants are legal, unless they offer the promise of food. So a doe in rut scent is fine, but a sweet corn scent would be illegal.

Just because a place sells it doesn't make it legal. Bass Pro Shops sells a bunch of scents that are illegal to use in California.

Question: I understand the baiting issue, but I would like clarification on deer and elk attractant scents, like “Tink’s” or “BuckBombs”. There are also scents for bears, hogs and predators and I want to be in full compliance for whatever I’m hunting for. (Michael J., Mojave)
Answer: California Fish and Game Commission regulations do not specifically prohibit using the products you mention. However, the regulations do prohibit taking resident game birds and mammals within 400 yards of any baited area.
The definition of baited area is, “. . . any area where shelled, shucked or unshucked corn, wheat or other grains, salt or other feed whatsoever capable of luring, attracting, or enticing such birds or mammals is directly or indirectly placed, exposed, deposited, distributed or scattered, and such area shall remain a baited area for ten days following complete removal of all such corn, wheat or other grains, salt or other feed.”
According to retired Department of Fish and Game (DFG) Captain Phil Nelms, scents sprayed into the air and allowed to disperse over a wide area in the wind generally do not fall within the definition of bait. Scent products that have to be applied directly to a surface such as a rock, tree or bush generally cause the game to come to that specific place, and if they feed on it, it is bait.
So, if the product you use causes the game to chew on, nibble at, lick, etc. the surface it is applied to, it is “feed” and as such falls within the definition of bait. In that case, you are prohibited from taking (e.g., hunt, pursue, catch, capture or kill or attempt any of those actions) game within 400 yards of that area.

The section she is referring to is section 257.5,CCR, T-14.
