Litch,

Which drainage are you talking about in 10? Spent some time in there this last weekend.

What's the consensus then, buy the bow or not?

Send me an e-mail at litch36@sbcglobal.net

There are a couple of primitive areas that allow Bow, Shotgun or Muzzleloader. The area that is bow only is tough to hunt, they see you coming and just walk off as the cover is sparse. I would use the Muzzleloader if you have one. Send me an e-mail, I'll get back to you with a lot more info.

If this was a blacktail hunt, it would be a no-brainer. Since its my first elk hunt, in a new area, I'm a bit nervous.

Were you the guy that snuck on that herd out in TA 20? If so you were camped a couple spots away from us. There was more opportunities on T Day, but not the whole base. We were set up in a great spot in TA10 waiting for a herd that was working it's way down the drainage when some tool in an SUV drove right through the middle and scattered them. That's public hunting for ya! We couldn't believe how many people never got out of their vehicles, just road hunted all day. We were glassing 2 Bulls one evening and every time they heard a vehicle, even in the distance, they just froze and wouldn't move out of the cover. When the coast was clear they crossed a road and walked by us not 50 yds away. Just goes to show you, Elk can't be road hunted.

Yeah that was me. I got right into the middle of the herd, but I got busted when I drew. It was my fault, I put myself in a bad position. But I had fun. Saw some great looking bulls too!

I know what you mean about the guys just cruisin' around. I think a lot of people take this hunt as a gimme and expect the elk just to be standin' around waiting to get shot. Did you guys end up connecting?

LTDANN, I was in FHL this past weekend and driving by the Stoney Reservoir in area 15 that I was telling you about last weekend, I saw a few cow elk grazing the green grass around the lake. I thought about grabbing one by the leg and tie it to a tree for ya for Nov. but apparently area 15 was not open for hunting and it was not my registered hunting area. I did whispered in the air and sent the words with the spirit over to the elk telling them to bring their whole family for a bath in the lake on Thanksgiving day. Ok enough of my hallucination. But no kidding, I did saw the elk there this past weekend.

I may be a little lost from time to time, but I was definitely at FHL this past weekend. Just had to leave before the weekend was over. Left at 7pm on Saturday evening. The reason is because I took my dad's truck there and didn't realize the insurance card expire on 7/11/09 until I got to the gate. The guard caught that and he put that date on my permit.

No, we never connected, but not from lack of trying. We hunted hard from sun up to sun down and saw a lot of Elk, just not in the right TA!

L2H,

Thanks for the thought on the cow. I'll find one, I hope.

Litch and Rampage, I crossed over to the darkside and got myself a bow over the weekend. I've got that option now and enough time to practice.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think its gonna be easy....but I'm not going to pass on one that I see standing around all crosseyed either.

Bowtech Diamond, the Rock. Package deal, added a S-coil stablizer and string tamer. Feels comfortable and accurate enough at 20 yds. just gotta practice, practice......

Good move. Have fun, it's a great hunt and run very well by the biologist at Liggett.

Dan,

I was there again this past weekend. Just got home a few hours ago. At 8am this morning I drove by the lake again and there were a herd of about 50 heads of elk grazing, some were bedded down. Next time I will remember to bring my camera so you can see what I'm saying. I bet you might be thinking November just won't come soon enough now.
