scouting elk tips

What do you do it yourself elk hunters look for when scouting elk this time of year?I went up scouting and was dissapointed not to find any elk.  I found deer, moose, and two bears but no elk. This is in an area with over 25% success for archery elk. I was at mid elevation( 8000 feet) with tons of lush grass and water.

With the summer heat I would be checking the north slopes where it would be the coolest. They will only be stirring shortly after dawn and late in the evenings. During the day, check the dark timber where they will bed down.
