Unsuccesful.
I hope you get'em. As you make your way uphill, travel parallel below the ridge line checking the thick oak between the rising hills. I was looking sat images and that seems to be the thickest brush that looks suitable for bedding areas. Look for trails and openings in the low lying brush. The far western edge of the property looks steeper, but also thick with brush.
Good luck!
Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to share what ever I see/learn about the ranch with anyone else who gets drawn. I've got a PM out the Godfather of public land hog hunting so hopefully he'll be kind enough to point me in the right direction.
I've scouted as much of the area as I could from the parking lots and side of the road and pretty familar with the terrain. My plan is so far is to scout as much the first day and look for areas to hit the following day. The map the DFG sent me has a few trails and waterholes marked on it.
Does anyone know if they ever put out stats on the share hunt drawings like they do with the other big game tags? As in, how many people really apply and what are the actual odds of being drawn?
Well i've returned and I wish this post would b e about the succesfull hunt I just got back from but unfortunatly I came up empty and so did the four other that were hunting also. I hiked up and down every hill side i could and couldn't find pig or any pig signs. There were 4 other hunters and they all siad the smae thing "didn't any and didnt see any signs"
The DFG rep said that there weren't any taken the during the last hunts and thought for sure we'd have some luck since it's been a while since anyone has hunted the ranch. We talked at the gate when i got back the first night and she told me that to of the hunters were going to come back int the morning and walk the ranch again. So i packed up and headed home.
Got up this morning and went to see if anyone had gone back out but there was no one at the gate, that was around 10am. I figure the rain sent them home early. I know there are pigs in that area I saw a wheat field not more then 2 miles from the edge of the ranch that was all rooted up so the pigs are in "the area". so to anyone else who get's drawn for this hunt go for it, it's worth it and who knows you might get lucky.
thanks again to L2H for all the info you gave me about you hunting trip there.
Adam
All in all it was worth it I got a great oppurtunity to hunt some private land and it only cost $10 for the drawing
Hmmmmmm....I wonder what happened to all the hogs. When I and my dad hunted there during the first year DFG opened up the share hunt, we saw three different groups, a total of about 50 hogs. Reports from the last few hunts and this one doesn't show much motivation to apply for the draw.
Adam, did you hike to the brush patch? How about the ponds, and springs? were there any water?
there was lots of water on the ranch, small streams and a few water holes fort he cattle. This is where i thought if anyplace there would be some signs of widllife and there where none. No actrive trail or hoof prints or wallow. the ponds looked like nothing was visiting them on a regular basis. As for wildlife on the ranch all i saw where 3 does that were on the run from something and about 40 turkeys.
Im sure there are pigs on the ranch maybe just not as many becuase they have found an easier source for Food and Water.
One thing that the program can change to benefit the hunters is to set the meeting time earlier. I tagged along with my dad 2 years ago. We hiked back to the end where L2H's dad shot his the year before. By the time we got back to the thick patches where we expected the pigs to be, the sun has been up for over an hour. We just missed the pigs cause coyotes already shredded a piglet on the exact trail we hoped to watch. Nothing left but a few gut strings and a lot of fresh blood.
Went there for the 10-11 date and I never saw any signs. Only heard turkeys and saw 6 deer. Kind of a waste of time so we went to some public land and actualy saw some fresh sign so at least the trip as a whole wasn't completely wasted.
Thats a shame...i never thought i hear that from Tejon...i ve seen groups of 20 to 10 to 5 and biggest group i counted 32...i guess better luck next time
I think this was the bobcat ranch not tejon wolf. there was a guy that said he didn't see any swine at tejon due to fog around the same time but that is very rare!
I stand corrected cali...lol...if its the bobcat ranch... if its that place..i haven't heard of any sighting and harvest either..my buddy quit that place too...but he did see a lone pig hurrying like there was no tomorrow... lol
