The pups that were in rabies quarentine finally got out with a clean bill of health. These are the pups I posted about earlier. They are now 4.5 months old. We just got ours last Friday. This pic is from today. I am so PUMPED! I hid 4 fresh sheds for the first time tonight. Tomorrow evening I'll take her on her first shed hunt. Keep your fingers crossed. Jerry Carlson is definately a genius...."deersheddog.com"

baddison,

You are the man. You told me around tax day. Your dog is much older than my pup. If you don't mind, tell us if you used in food rewards with the yard lessons with this dog. What is your dog's name.

I am excited to see you having success. YEE HAW.

WBPruett,

Yes, "Lucy" is almost 4 months older than Major. Any time I do something with sheds I use cooked hamburger. I know Jerry suggests chicken, but when your in the cattle business hamburger is cheaper.

Last night my wife took her out to go to the bathroom and before she could stop her she took off with her nose in the air to a shed I hid 200 yards away and retreived it. My wife was totally unprepared. I hope this didn't hurt Lucy.

Wayne,

Not yet. I've taken her on planted sheds 3 times. She has done well, but she seemed to be back tracking in her training. I would send her to look and she would just kinda mill around. Once she put her nose on the shed and kept milling around. I decided I probably took her to fast in the training. I only spent a couple of times with her retreiving the thrown sheds and giving the command to do so. I've decided to back up and do the thrown sheds a little longer.

The problem is there is a fine line and I don't think it would be good to get her dependant on me throwing the sheds, but I want her to know when I say "Get the Bone" she knows if she retreives a shed for me she gets a tasty reward.

Any thoughts?

brett,

How many days has Lucy been at your house? Another way of asking that is - how many times have you feed her? Does she really want to please you? I think it important that you feed her. She has to bond with you, not kids or the wife.

Major is still a little pup. I think he was born on Feb 16th. I have not got it his papers yet. He will be registered.

I decided to feed him in the morning and in the evening. This pup is all over me every time I go to his kennel. My grandson is 22 months old today. Major will come to me past son and grandson when I call. I am number one to him.

When you posted the pic of Lucy the other day, I put 2 sheds in Major's Kennel. At this time the sheds don't mean a thing to him. Once every few days when I call his name he will look at me. He just don't know his name yet.

I think Lucy is doing fine considering she has a new home. The best thing about Major is he wants to be with me and wants my attention. He has had about 4 riding lessons in a vehicle. He is doing okay in that department. I need him to travel good so we have started early. His longest riding time has been 25 minutes without a break.

I will take the sheds out of the kennel in a few days. I just want him to see them right now. We have attempted no retrieving. I assume you are training a hungry dog, one that hasn't been feed. I think Lucy needs to be hungry and you need to quit while she is still excited. Leave her wanting more.

Just my thoughts, let me know what you think. We both will learn some do's & don't from each other. Not too many folks interested in this subject at the present time.

Lucy looks great with that shed in her mouth. Hungry dog, repetitions and patience. Wayne

Thanks for the input I'll keep working. One of the biggest keys I think that you pointed out is patience. We have only had her 9 days.

I think you might have been the one that posted this but I'm going to say it again because I think it applies "If it was easy everyone would have one"

SO TRUE.

Brett,

I have been doing what I should be doing with Major. He was born on 2-18-04, so we have past 3 months. He is about 15 pounds.

He is gaining intelligence and maturing. We have had 3 lessons with an antler, each 10-12 days apart.

It is clear that he is not ready, but one day he did retrieve the shed about 5-6 times out of 9 throws. No food reward has been introduced.

Antlers aren't in his kennel much of the time. I exposed him to them and then removed them. He knows what they are but can't get bored with them.

In the picture you can see he has a small shed in his mouth. Tennessee sheds are small and he is too little for a good shed yet.

Let me know how Lucy is progressing.

Wayne

Wayne,

Major is still a great looking dog. I can't wait to see what he looks like when he gets fully mature.

Lucy is doing well. Its getting to hot here to do a whole lot. Work has also been keeping me busy. I've been working alot on obediance training. I was going to wait until she was really hooked on sheds, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
