Depends on the region you live. In the North (Minnesota) it is typical to start finding sheds in mid to lat February. Although; I've seen a buck with his headgear still connected well into May. Some may find them earlier or later but it's pretty common to start 'shedding' in late February here in the north. Happy hunting

I agreee, Shedding will start even as early as January here depending on how wore out a buck got during the rut and how the current wheather conditions are.

I too have seen bucks with head gear well into april, which is a frustrating sight when your shed hunting at the time!

Like the above posts I would say that that the end of Jan. for deer.

Elk will start in March. I've got pictures of a herd of all bull elk with 1/2 of them with antlers still and the other half are already have a few inches of velvet poking up.

The earliest I've ever found a fresh shed has been Dec. 7. It was a small one off a yearling buck. So I guess it could be anytime starting in December here in New Brunswick.

Look for areas where they're bedding and feeding. I usually follow the deer trails if there's enough snow on the ground.
It's kind of tricky this time of the year because you have to time your searches just right to be sure a fresh snow doesn't bury a recently fallen antler. Try to wait as long as possible after a snow, but before another snow event or rain to do your searches to increase your odds of success.
Pack a lunch, tp and a camera for your day long adventure. Coffee too!
Good luck---

(The bucks that are in my trailcam pics still have their antlers as of Jan 3rd.)

I had 4 bucks in my backyard just a few nights ago, all 4 were still looking "horny!" I usually start looking in mid Feb. here in Ohio.
