The morels are starting to go nuts here and I need a surefire way for freezing them. I rinsed and froze about 25 lbs. of them last year and they all turned to brown mush!
<
I think I read hear that someone fried them up first then froze? Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated. Here's a cool pic I took this morning while out morel/shed hunting.

Man, you're just killin me with those big sheds. What a nice find. I'm beatin my brains out in that state park, just lousy with deer, beaten down, walking on trails cut into the side hills about 3" and walking on a carpet of deer droppings.....and I can't find so much as a lousy spike horn in there. I'm really pissed now and am determined to walk every inch of that park till I find at least one shed. Again, that's a beauty--way to go.

Calm down and breathe Shaq. The shed isn't big.It doesn't even make 60 inches. The morels are small. I had found the shed earlier and set it with the mushrooms. I thought it would make a neat wallpaper on my pc. Sorry to get you all flustered. You need to find some bone. That will calm you down.

Congrats on a great day!! A shed and some morels all in the same day. That shed laying among the morels was a great idea.Great pic!
Everyone knows eating them fresh is the best way!! No matter how you fix them up.
Last year I tried frying and freezing and they never taste the same. They get greasy and tough, for me anyway.
I also tried frying plain in butter then freezing and I thought they turned out great!! Thaw your mushrooms out and throw in the frying pan with onions and a steak.....
I also froze some fresh and they look great in the freezer, but when you thaw out to fry they get soggy and water in bag from mushrooms thawing out turns brown. They look like hell.If you let mushrooms thaw just enough to work with them then fry up they turn out pretty good.Almost as good as fresh picked fried up.
I have a Food Saver I freeze mine with which helps out from getting freezer burn. You have to freeze on cookie sheet first the fresh ones and the ones fried in butter freeze in food saver bag then vacuum seal.
Good Luck!!

Deershed, Thanks for the info. The ones that I rinsed, then froze thawed out and looked like soggy cardboard. It really sucked to go to all that work of picking, cleaning and bagging only to throw them out 3 months later. I'm going to try dehydrating some tomorrow. I was wondering about freezing them as picked. Maybe that would keep them from turning to mush. Hang in there guys your turn will come for the morels. My hunting partner and I are blessed to have access to such large peices of river ground that have such different types of terrain, we can usually find them somewhere. And Shaq, hope you realize I was just funnin ya in my other post. I'll try to get some "small" shed pics posted so you don't think that all I find are big ones. I have found a bunch of small ones. MrRee, Thanks for the generous offer of info! : ) Good luck and be safe everyone.

I have good luck freezing mine by cutting them in half & freezing in a block with lots of water.

Also just run a needle through them whole and hang a string of them up to try. Then store in a tin.

If I want to freeze some morels I have had the best luck freezing them before I soak them in water. Yep with the dirt on them. Then when you want some fresh morels next winter you thaw them, soak them and fry em up .

Where do you live that the Morels are popping up already? they usually come into season around the first of May around here.....I love those things! We have frozen them before and what we do is clean them and then fry them up like normal then let them cool and then put them in a baggy and throw them in the freezer. then when you get a craving for 'shrooms, in the dead of winter, you just take them outta the freezer and then re-fry them then eat em!! works for me!! Oh, by the way, nice picture!!!

I'm in Ne. It's a little early here but we had 8 inches of snow 2 weeks ago followed by 80 degree weather. It's been cool for about a week now but I think that warmer weather got them going. I just got back from picking some more and in the 3 times I've been out I have picked about 15 lbs.

Gee, if we all of a sudden one of you guys disappear from the forum, not posting anymore, etc...are we to assume someone screwed up and picked some "false" morels or similar and punched out? I'd like to try picking some of those because we gotta have them around here I would guess but what I hear is that if you screw up and eat the wrong mushroom, they're typically fatal and with NO ANTIDOTE. How do you learn whats a real morel?

Cool pic 135! I'm envious of the sheds but I run across a few morel's now and then. I found the first morels of this spring a couple of weeks ago while turkey hunting. Can't help you with freezing them 'cause they tend to get eaten before they can be frozen.

Shag, I really dont think you could pick the wrong Morel they have a distinctive look to them and are not easily mistaken for poisonos ones. If it looks like a Morel, smells like a Morel, then it's probably a morel. Trust me once you've eaten one you'll be hooked! You'll become an addict, it's the Cocaine of the wilderness, and Mother Nature is the dealer....LOL

Shag-does this guy look familiar? This is the little guy when he was little.
<
And he found that mushroom himself.I got him started early looking for mushrooms just like with the sheds.I was carrying him and put him down while I looked around a little bit.I was about 20 yds from him when he yelled "I found one" I didn't believe him,but went over to take a look.
Sure enough he found one and it was a keeper too.
MrRee-I thought you might like these pics too.
