When you clean your moly barrels, how often, if at all, do you scrub the moly build-up completely out and start over again? I have never done this, and was wondering if I need too.
I don't think the problem is with moly buildup. It's with losing your moly coating (through shooting and cleaning)and having to recoat the bore.
As for cleaning, most of the guys I know who use moly clean with Kroil whereas I use Hoppe's No. 9. Cleanup should be mostly powder fouling thereby cutting cleaning time drastically.
You should clean after about 500 moly rounds and recoat the bore. Clean after 200-250 rounds of non-moly coated bullets and recoat the bore.
I suggest you search for moly threads on rec.guns. The topic has been discussed to death.
Remember to start with a clean bore, coat with a moly paste, let it sit awhile, then run through clean patches until they stop coming out dirty with moly (should be 5-10 patches). Then start shooting moly coated bullets or uncoated bullets. You have to clean and recoat more frequently when shooting non-moly bullets.
I suggest you get some exam gloves at Costco to keep your hands clean when coating your bore. The stuff is a real mess.
