Hi, just found this board and it seems that many posters are from So Cal. Hope I can contribute some time. But now I have a question.

I've been to Lytle Creek many times but that drive is too much; especially the dirt road on my car.

I haven't tried the West End Club, how's that?

I see that some people have posted about San Gabriel Valley Gun Club. My understanding is that they don't let you shoot Mil Surp ammo with steel cores. Is this true?

I don't hand load so I try to use the cheaper mil surp ammo.

Thanks.

That's most likely true, but are you certain that your mil surplus is steel core. I thought only the Armour Piercing stuff is steel core. Having said all of this they don't ask to see your ammo when you check in and you are shooting into a hill side and not into steel targets. I'd take what you have and shoot it, but theres a better than not chance your milsurp. is not AP. Happy shooting.

Dave in LB.

Thanks for the reply.

If they take a magnet to your ammo they can find out if it is steel core. The Danish and Korean 30-.06 ammo have steel cores. I think their web site says something about they will check your ammo.

Ever had a problem there?

I shoot at the San Gabriel Valley Gun Club at least once a month and I've never seen them check anyones ammo.

Where is the West End Club located?

I've never had my ammo checked at SGGC or any other outdoor range. Only the indoor ranges and they were concerned about Hollowpoints. With the new Backstops at many of the ranges hollowpoints isn't a problem anymore either.

I shoot regularly and am a member of the SGVGC. The reason that the club prohibits the use of steel jacketed and steel core bullets, as well as tracers and incendiary bullets (which may also be illegal by the way), is that they pose a real fire hazard. The club shoots into the dirt on a hillside. When steel bullets hit some objects they cause a sparks. The brush on the hillside is dry and vulnerable to brush fires. Since the range is next to the Angeles National Forest, we are constantly trying to maintain good relations with the USFS. Incidentally the range masters do check suspicious ammunition. Hollow pointed bullets and most other bullets are not a problem at the range.

Anyway, the public is welcome at the range. It has great facilities including an ~80 point 200 yd rifle range, a ~20 point 50 yd. pistol range, all with covered shooting positions, and 4 trap and skeet fields. It has 2 rifle/pistol ranges which can be rented to clubs and law enforcement agencies. The club also has a restaurant on site. The range is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The junior division of the club shoots Saturday afternoons. Quite a few other groups compete regularly.

The web site is at: San Gabriel Valley Gun Club

I shoot regularly at Angeles shooting range, and they do check ammo there quite often. Infact they have a magnet on every bench for you to test your ammo. I wish I knew this before I bought 500 rounds of steel core. By the way where is the nearst BLM to Los Angeles that allows target shooting?
