I shoot hogs almost exclusively with a pistol. Probably the majority of hogs shot with pistol were by hunters using hounds. At those ranges 40.cal is sufficent. I shoot a 41mag. Most of these shots are within a few feet to the barrel pressed against the hog itself. The maximum caliber most guys allow in a dog hunting situation is the 44cal. Anything bigger than that your guaranteeing a pass through shot and potentially endangering the lives others.
Otherwise I dont have any guys hunting with pistol shooting at any real ranges except for those using the T/C pistols. Those guys are pretty few and far in between.
