Sidearm question for chukar and quail hunter

Hello fellow chukar hunters! As usual, I’m going through my gear and figuring out what to do. Always when I’m camping I carry a pistol, but during the day when hunting I don’t want to leave it in the truck due to possible theft. Usually I’m out with a dog for many hours before returning to the truck.

I don’t feel the need to carry while bird hunting, however, feel irresponsible leaving in the vehicle. Last year, I carry IWB and it was not comfortable with a pack like final rise or all of the other hip vests out there. I’ve been looking into a kenai chest holster or some kind of holster to clip on the shell pocket. However if on the shell pocket I believe it will bounce around to much or bang into every rock.!

If anyone carry a side arm with a pack like wingworks, final rise, q5, etc, let me know how and where please for some ideas.

I have the Kenai chest holster it is comfortable to wear when you have a backpack or set of bios on. The only drawback with the one I have is my 20sf fits a little too snug and can take a little more effort to draw then I would like, but then I am not going to drop or lose my firearm in any circumstances.

Just thinking aloud here. Have you thought of carrying a dozen 00 buckshot with you? I do understand the need for pistol however.

If you don’t want to leave it in your vehicle, just stash it somewhere near your starting place.

These all have a cable that allows you to secure the safe to a vehicle. I also have a few Kenai chest holsters and love them. Not sure what pistol you keep with you, but another option would be to carry it in the zippered pocket on the back of the vest since you don't feel the need to have it assailable while hunting.

If you don't want to carry it just leave it at home. Also don't carry any 00 buckshot with you, that is lead shot and if you get stopped with it they will ticket you and take your gun, maybe even your ride as well. Don't know if they would put the cuffs on you but they could.

so I’ve been debating caring something like that with me, Instead of a sidearm. my only concern is the shotgun I have was marketed as an “ultralight”. I’ve heard you gotta be careful shooting the heavy loads through light shotguns. But I’m doubt 1 of 2 shots would affect anything.

If your life is really threatened , why would you care if you score your shotgun barrel?

Even your ultralight can cycle standard velocity 00, 2 3/4 shells.
#2-4s will do fine as well.

I don’t know what fish and game would do if you had lead shot on you but explained it was for self defense.

My understanding has always been regardless of what you are hunting that if you have lead ammo in your possession while hunting for the gun you are using then they automatically assume you are using it no questions asked. I don't believe you can carry lead free and lead ammo for the gun at the same time and not get arrested and/or have all you license privileges suspended. Carrying a handgun while hunting is different since that you can easily argue for self defense, however a shotgun or rifle they have to assume you are using the lead ammo to hunt.

If my life was actually threatened probably smart to have a follow up shot. Something I’ve heard about the light shotguns, wanted some input.

I don't know how you fellas look at it but isn't a shotgun a pretty good self defense weapon? I mean, if someone has you in the crosshairs, you won't hear the shot.
A handgun is normally thought of as a short range weapon, so is a shotgun.
I like the firepower a shotgun would offer in most confrontations and would want to carry a handgun just to carry a handgun.

I like the logic, the only variable I would add is that if they were to see you out hunting w/a shotgun, the surprise of a pistol might work to your advantage.

In the field I carry a shotgun, and feel much more protected by it than the handgun I carry when I go to Wal-Mart.

A load of bird shot might not be as deadly as a lead bullet, but it will stop anything within range of a pistol and is far more accurate.

Bird shot will kill just as good as 00 buck at close range a chest or head shot will do it.

Many years ago one of my son’s friend was road hunting for deer. A tree squirrel ran across the road so the boy grabbed a single shot 16 gauge with #6 and took chase. He woke a sleeping four point buck, and shot it from 15 yards or so away. Deer didn’t know what hit him. You wouldn’t believe the hole the shot made.

I have an Alien Gear Chest Rig. It is comfortable and ease of access incase you need it.
