Hunted it in the past and will hunt it again in the future. In my opinion, it gets hammered on opening weekend, so I only hunt it on the last week of the season. The forest service closes/locks you out of "their" campgrounds, but there is still plenty of room to squeeze in someplace up high. The deer numbers are way down in that herd, just like 7a,7b.

About 4 years ago I took my little brother on his first deer hunt behind the Buttes. It was October 14th and snow was falling hard for the first time that season, tracks everywhere. We got out of the pickup and walked logging roads. Within 30 min I see my brother draw his 30/06 uphill...I did not see any deer and thought he was scoping a stump...then..Ka-BOOM! Next thing I see in a buck summer-salting down hill. Precise heart-shot. Not bad for his first deer hunt in CA for all of 30 minutes; just after I got done explaing, "don't be dissapointed if we don't see a deer. CA deer hunting is tough." Explains why my brother is a sharp-shooter in the army now... :) The icing on the cake...after dressing his buck, then putting in the truck, we're headed out walking for my deer. 45 min into our walk he spots a group of 3 bucks. I picked the biggest one and shot down hill at 120 yards. I asked my brother, "did I get him?" He says, "Ya...ya... he dropped hard!" And he sure did, straight through the spine with the ol /06. That was the most memorable hunting trip of my life... I believe we had luck on our side that day because of the snow. I have hunted the Buttes since, during archery season and have seen deer taken, but the concentration of deer is not like it once was. I do have a spot up there that If I were to hunt d-3 this year I might hunt there... Also if you don't have any luck at the Buttes you may want to go roam around in D-3 out of Grey Eagle; I've seen some of D-3's biggest in that area. If you're iterested I can PM you. Just let me know. Good hunting! Jaeger

Pray for weather. I too shot a deer two years ago, Sat it was snowing saw a bunch of deer and Sunday it rained hard and melted all the snow. The deer where everywhere. If you get weather you should see alot of animals.

Sierra Buttes can be tough and it does get hunted hard opening weekend. People use dogs to make a run on the herd
