I got an email from my FFL last night stating that my Converted SMLE Lee- Enfield 45-70 aka "Smelly Nelly" had arrived so I picked her up this morning with a brief stop at the PD to register, and she lays beside me as I type. Nice dark walnut stock, nickel plated bolt & trigger, 100% blue on barrel with cosmoline still in action parts like the safety so i'm guessing never fired since leaving Navy Arms. She comes up to the shoulder nicely with sights lining up naturally. Working the bolt is very smooth even from the shoulder thanks to the cock on closing bolt. Also very easy to uncock, just open bolt again and hold trigger while closing. Trigger pull alittle stiff but i'll be stone it soon enough. She is in fine shape the grand daughter of the 1879 Remington-Lee Navy. My dies & brass are on it's way already having 50 405 grain cast plain base bullets on hand. Can't wait to shoot her. Not bad at all for $300 INCLUDING SHIPPING. Range report will follow.
LOOK OUT BIG ISLAND PUA'A & PIPI, SMELLY NELLY WILL BE ON YOUR TRAIL SOON!

Uncle Ji,
That is one good lookin' Smacker Boomer Thumper you got in there. Awesome!!!!! I can hardly wait to read your stories smackin' those Hawaiian Hoofs with the .458 caliber PASS THRU bullet holes. Molly Gravyyyy!!!!
I am just twitchin' with excitement on how those heavy, heavy slugs will topple those tasty Hawaiian Vancouver Bulls, Billy Goats, Exotic Sheep, Exotic Deer and of course those ever present Hogs. You guys really have to start training a Billy Goat Pack Train to haul away the steaks and ribs from those Vancouver Bulls. Good Hunting Uncle Ji. Oh a range report also please on that Smacker Boomer Thumper. God Bless.

One of my very favorites... 45-70... I've got a Buffalo Gun with a 36" barrel and globe sights... good out to 150 yards - and no kick. But single shot only... I dig the Marlin 45-70 Guide GUN in stainless too... but it's about TWICE the price - not worth it if you ask me ;-)

congrats... Range Report!

Uncle Ji,
I am a fan of Big Game rifles that are .30 caliber and UP. Especially the 45-70. I just know you picked the perfect caliber for those thick Hawaiian jungle close in shots at Big Bulls and Big Boars. I am already giddy from expectation on your upcoming hunt harvest reports from your trusty, powerful, charge stopping 45-70 loaded with hot ammo. With Doc swinging the same potent caliber, that is one AWESOME COMBO sweeping the Hawaiian forests for steaks, ribs and chops. Hopefully when Speckmisser finally trots along on one of those Bulls and Boars Hawaiian Hoof Hunt, you guys will connect with one of those one ton Vancouver Bulls and those 45-70's will do their awesome job. Just looking at those pictures and those Bulls are BIG!!! Coupled with those thick Hawaiian Rain Forest and that is really like hunting those BIG Australian Water Buffalo and Banteng(a smaller wild cow species) in the Hot, Humid, Tropical Northern Australian Territories without leaving American soil OR going thru U.S. and Australian Customs redtape/bureaucracy. That is just really neat. Doc definitely found what he was looking for. Hope to hear soon from your 45-70 spittin' lead at s'umthin'. God Bless.

Ozstiker22,
That 36" 45-70 barrel should squeeze every last ounce of speed from those heavy .458 caliber bullets. You need to topple a Big Ugly Boar or somethin' with that Howitzer of yours. You need to go to Doc's hunting paradise and smack a big tasty boar from the roadside as Doc says in one area the Big Ugly Boars are just roaming along the road. With a 420 grain Super Hard Cast bullet at 1800+ FPS, the Big Ugly Boars do not stand a chance. Those big bore bullets passing thru the vital organs are just too much and topples the big boars with their legs kicking uselessly. In the Del Mar gun show, you can occasionally find bargains on a good used Marlin lever 45-70. It really feels like one is CARRYING A HOWITZER when it is loaded with hot ammo and one is just about to smack an unsuspecting Big Ugly Boar with those speedy, heavy, heavy 420 grain Super Hard Cast slugs(more than TWICE the weight of a 200 grain 30-'06 heavy bullet). Those speedy, heavy, heavy bullets are just unstoppable in a Big Boar and will smash heavy SHOULDER BONES AND ALL passing thru and thru. Wait till you smack a Big Ugly Boar with your 45-70 loaded with hot ammo and you will be amazed. 'Nuff said.

I took a shot at a running boar (when do they ever stop moving?) and realized I need to use shooting stix with that LOOOOOONNNNNGGGGG heavy barrel...

The round disintigrated the dirt between his legs.... But if I'd have connected, I KNOW he'd have done a back flip :)

Out of all my rifles, it's my favorite gun to shoot... It's a single shot, break barrel, I carry a second round like a cigar between my 2nd and 3rd fingers... it's fun, feels like I'm huntin buff in africa :)

Ozstriker22,
Yup!!! Those cigar sized Buff Buster ammo definitely will topple those Big Ugly Boars. Hope you connect on one real soon. I just love that HOWITZER CARRY feeling when swinging and firing that old, reliable 45-70 Boomer. Squeakers are for varmints. Boomers are for Bulls, Boars and Bucks. 'Nuff said.
