Until this year snow has never been a major problem for my shed hunting.Sure there have been days postponed cause of the snow, but nothing like this year.I never realized how lucky I had it.
I can honestly say I feel for you guys that get snow like this every year. How do you guys cope with it???
I've been wanting to get out so bad that I went out for a walk yesterday. The snow was about knee deep and didn't find any,but it felt great just being out.I can't wait for the snow to melt, I can only imagine all the sheds just laying out there.
Anyone ever find them in the snow??Not a couple inches of snow, but in a couple feet of snow??

Guess I'll go check out my sheds from the past and hope the snow melts soon.

You know, we're up to our A** in snow from November to almost April and it get's pretty frustrating. I never find much at all until it's almost all off--just patchy spots left, then I start to find em. It's like that article by "Kansan" in the last issue of "Whitetail". You look for 3" of antler, right? I have found a few when the snow got down to a few inches of wet slushy snow where I actually spotted just tines sticking up through the snow. Unbelievably, they stood out like a turd in a punch bowl. The only good thing is that the snow sometimes keeps the squirrels off em and maybe keeps casuals from spotting them as they go by on a snow mobile or cross country skis. Later.

Shag,

Ya, this snow really sucks!!!! I think it might help w/ the competion though, by the time it all melts people will be working on there houses and yards and might forget about all those sheds out there waiting to be picked up!!!! Good luck and happy hunting!

Givemtheblade, I see you're in snow country too. We've had snow on since early November but it's come down alot. I was out on the snowshoes Saturday and it was down to depths of about 20" to 30" now after a few good melting days last week. I'm drooling thinking of my first trip into each of my spots after it's gone and what might be laying under the snow here and there. Of course, I'm always optimistic and they're harder to find than I think they're gonna be, but I don't give a dam because I'm just so happy to be out lookin. Good luck to you too.

AMEN SHAG,

I'm always optimistic and they're harder to find than I think they're gonna be, but I don't give a dam because I'm just so happy to be out lookin. Ain't that the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Three years ago I got a picture of an awsome buck in the middle of january, I hit my favorite spot several times and pretty much gave up on finding them, but june came around and I decided to give it one last chance well, I found one side and either I walked by it several times or he didn't lose it until late april. I was very excited when I found it but if it hadn't been for the photo I would of never knew he was there. So never give up on a spot you know will produce!!!!!

If I could find conditions in my shed hunting areas like I have in my yard I think sheds would be possible to find if they've dropped since the snow fell.I took a big heavy elk shed out in yard and tossed it where nobody had walked or where snow was piled up from shoveling.
I tossed it maybe 10" and shed layed on top of snow, shed weighed 11lbs.
With the warm weather and snow starting to melt then freezing back up it's put a nice solid crust on top of snow.
Might be worth while making a trip this weekend.

Come to think of it, I did score a few in heavy snow once. It was a winter where we were getting slaughtered worse than usual and I had just by chance caught a glimpse of a mess of deer in a thck woods as I whizzed past on the highway. I went back on the weekend or two later (it was late February) and I snow-shoed in there. I picked 5 or 6 out of a very thick pine thicket where the deer were bedding. It was right next to a one acre corn field that had been left standing and I mean it was pounded...but only by maybe 15 deer. One was a large 4 pt side with a beautiful long beam. It was badly chewed ---but none of the smaller forkies were. In the next few years I grabbed a couple each year out of that general area but not like that first time. I've noticed that in years when the snows were REALLY heavy and the deer were really "in jail" for a while, I did good.

I don't mind the snow, it's the cold windy weather! Givemtheblade said it right, it's damn nice just being out there! I've only found about 10 so far this year and all but one have been in the snow. Here's a pic of a matched set I recently found. I couldnt beleive I spotted them allmost 50 yards away! Something just looked different so I walked over and there they were.

Hey....that looks like a really great pair. How about a pic of them with the snow off. By the way, that's a pretty cool way to photo sheds before they've been picked up....right where they fell. Way to go.

Shaq, When I can get my son home long enough I'll have him upload the pics for me so I can post them. I'm not very bright when it comes to saving pics with my server. Until then here's another one in the snow. I was driving my truck along the field edge when I spotted this single. If it wasn't for the snow I probably would have missed it.

135inchsingle,

What a natural camo job. I agree. I can't imagining trying to find those things in that stubble. The whole field looks like a bunch of horns. Nice eyes!

135inchsingle-I always enjoy seeing your shed pics!! I really like the pic of the set in the snow.
I tried taking some pictures of sheds as I find them, but they don't turn out half as nice as yours.

Thank you for the kind words! One thing to think about though.....I only show you guys the good ones!

I take a lot more bad pics than good. Before I went digital it was nothing to burn a roll of 24 and only get one good one! I just entered 2 different shed pics in a local newspapers photo contest. If they do any good this site will be the first place I show them.

Good photo of a good shed. I get a charge out of seeing that shed laying there even though I didn't find it--and yes, nice job spotting that sucker. I'm gonna have Deershed teach me how to properly save the digital images so they can be posted here--I tried it and they came out "small"....not full sized. Whatever--nice sheds and keep the photos coming.
